Sinead O’Connor shares tribute as her teenage son Shane dies

One of Sinead O’Connor’s final TV appearances has been unearthed after the singer spoke to US chatshow, Today in 2021.

The musician best known for her debut and cover of Prince’s Nothing Compares 2 U, addressed her career controversies and her memoir when she chatted to Carson Daly in June 2021.

“Sinead O’Connor was never meant to be a pop star,” she told the presenter.

Sinead was asked about tearing up a picture of Pope John Paul II on Saturday Night Live back in 1992, and described the act as “a protest”.

When asked if she considers herself to be the “first cancelled” person, she replied: “That’s a good question, I never thought of that.”

The singer went on: “It was a blessing because I had to make my living doing the thing I love doing, which was making my music live.”

She added: “That picture I took off my mother’s bedroom wall, it was a way of ripping her up, as well.”

Sinead detailed “abuse” she suffered at the hands of her mother in her 2021 memoir, Remeberings.

After rebuilding her life following public declarations that she had been badly suffering, she told Carson: “I’m good yeah, I’m really good.

“I moved into his place about a year ago.

“It’s really peaceful, somebody told me that you have anxiety.”

“True, I am riddled with it,” Carson confirmed before Sinead added: “I know what it’s like, it’s terrible.

“I suffer form a condition called Complex Post Traumatic Stress Disorder form things that I went through growing up.”

Tragically, Sinead lost her 17-year-old son Shane not long after.

The teenager took his life in January 2022 after fleeing hospital while on suicide watch.

In her final tweet, Sinead posted a photo of Shane and said: “Been living as undead night creature since. He was the love of my life, the lamp of my soul. 

“We were one soul in two halves. He was the only person who ever loved me unconditionally.

“I am lost in the bardo without him.”
