Former EastEnders star Nigel Harman will join Strictly Come Dancing

Nigel Harman admitted he doesn’t tend to “stick around” at the British Soap Awards, describing them as “madness”.

Nigel won viewers’ hearts when he starred as troubled Dennis Rickman in EastEnders between 2003 and 2005.

The soon-to-be Strictly Come Dancing star has since taken on other roles in soaps and currently plays Max Cristie in Casualty.

He may not be seen for long if he attends the British Soap Awards though, as he said in an old interview he doesn’t like to stay too long.

Back in 2013, Nigel was asked about the awards and replied: “I never stuck around long: I’d get in and get out before the carnage began.”

Speaking to Metro, he continued: “I’m a pipe and slippers man, I think. Those soap awards are madness.”

The 50-year-old left the BBC soap with his character murdered, and despite 18 years passing since his exit, he remains a soap favourite.

He admitted he wanted his character’s ending to be final though, dashing the hopes of fans.

Talking about Dennis’ popularity, he stated: “That was part of my reasoning [to be killed off].

“I had a very strong instinct that I wanted to draw a line underneath the character.”

Speaking to Inside Soap, he added: “I think that’s why he’s resonated for so long.

“I wasn’t aware [how popular Dennis was] at the time.

“People still come up to me 20 years later [and that’s when] I’ve noticed the impact that Dennis has had.”

Nigel has been signed up to this year’s Strictly Come Dancing, which he admitted he was “terrified” about.

He joins Amanda Abbington, Angela Rippon, Layton Williams, Krishnan Guru-Murthy, Eddie Kadi, Angela Scanlon, Zara McDermott, Adam Thomas, Nikita Kanda, Ellie Leach, Jody Cundy and Bobby Brazier in our line-up.

Most recently joining BBC’s Casualty as Max Cristie, Holby ED’s new Clinical Lead, Nigel also appeared in Downton Abbey.

His role as Dennis won him multiple awards, including Most Popular Newcomer at the National Television Awards.
