Strictly Come Dancing contestant Nikita Kanda was left red-faced as she accidentally admitted "being on top is better" live on air.

The radio presenter appeared on spin-off show Strictly It Takes Two on Wednesday (September 27) alongside her professional dancer partner Gorka Marquez to discuss their first performance with host Janette Manrara. The couple found themselves second from last on the leaderboard on Saturday (September 23) night.

Discussing the result, Nikita said: "It's not the best feeling i'll be honest. Obviously nobody wants to be near the bottom. Being on top is better. Um, I mean." Janette interrupted asking: "Wow, wow, what we're talking about? Still talking about the leaderboard right?" A giggling Nikita continued: "I just feel like I'll take it on the chin. The comments weren't that bad. I was OK with he comments.

Gorka agreed: "They were very good. They were constructive" before sharing that they'll be dancing to Beyoncé's Single Ladies this weekend. The dancer was overheard giving a "defiant" reply to the low score he and Nikita received from Craig Revel-Horwood for their first weekend.

After their performance, Craig remarked that Nikita seemed nervous at various points during the dance and his rather lukewarm critique was reflected in his score, with him awarding a very measly three out of 10, as boos echoed around the studio. While the backlash to Craig's low marks was loud, Gorka's response could just about be heard over the top of it, as he quipped: "My favourite number."

Only one other couple received a lower score than Gorka and Nikita on Saturday night. They ended with a total of 18 out of 40 and one place below them on the first leaderboard of the new series were Les Dennis and Nancy Xu, who scored just 16, including an even lower 2 from Craig.

It comes after Gorka had fans feeling emotional this week when he said a final farewell to his two children and fiancee Hollyoaks actress Gemma Atkinson. The dancer waved goodbye to Gemma and their children, four-year-old Mia and two-month-old Thiago, as he prepared to dedicate his time to Strictly.

Sharing a selection of images for fans on Instagram of the family, he wrote: "Last one at home for a while” with a red heart emoji and the hashtag "home". The Spanish dancer shared a selfie with Mia, picture of Gemma and Mia looking after Thiago and Mia at home. Fans rushed to support Gorka, with one fan writing: "Oh Gorks, feel for ya," and another follower typed: "Good luck, your beautiful family will be cheering you on along with the rest of us."

Gemma and Gorka first met on Strictly in 2017, although they weren’t Strictly partners – with Gorka partnered with Alexandra Burke and Gemma with Aljaž Škorjanec. Rumours swirled around the couple during the show until February 2018 when the pair went public with their romance. She insisted however that they were “genuinely” not together while competing on the show.
