BBC’s latest reality show Unbreakable sees new couples go head to head with long married ones to see whose relationship is the strongest. Host and comedian Rob Beckett puts the six celebrities and their partners through mental and physical challenges as they play to win the first Unbreakable couple title. Shirley Ballas and her boyfriend Danny Taylor took part in the show as she opened up on the challenges they faced, whilst giving a heartfelt tribute to her boyfriend.

As Rob gets to watch the couples bicker and work their way through the challenges, he will also be joined by relationship experts Anjula Mutanda and Maria McErlane.

The pair awards points for each challenge, with couples being eliminated as the show progresses.

Strictly judge Shirley took up the offer of having a tribute to her actor boyfriend Danny Taylor inked on her back in one of the challenges.

Alongside Shirley and Danny, who have been together for four years, is a mixed bag of relationships, including Charlie Mullins, the millionaire founder of Pimlico Plumbers, and his singer girlfriend RaRa, who’ve been together for just 18 months after meeting on a beach in Marbella.

While Falklands War hero Simon Weston and his wife Lucy have been married for 32 years and have three children.

Opening up about the show and how she and Danny found it, Shirley explained: “I think Danny would agree the emotional challenges were the hardest for us both.

“But they really showed me the importance of working through these things together and how best we could support each other.

“Those challenges really strengthened us as a couple, and that was one of the best things to come out of the show,” she added.

“I learnt that Danny is a lot smarter than I gave him credit for and that we work really well together as a team.

“I learnt a relationship constantly needs work from both sides. Appreciation and communication are the key,” she told Daily Mail.

Shirley has been married twice before she met Danny, but expressed she would love him to propose.

The pair met whilst both starring in a Christmas production of Jack and The Beanstalk in 2018 before confirming their romance the following year.

She previously spoke about meeting Danny and told the Loose Women panel: “We met on panto as friends.

“It didn’t really take off until March… for him. I fell in love way before… I think for me it was first sight.

“He was going through a difficult time in his relationship. We did become friends and then probably in about February I said, ‘I love you Danny’ and he said, ‘I know’. It took a while.”

Loose Women star Denise Welch is also taking part alongside her husband Lincoln Townley, who she married in 2013, also opened up about the struggles they faced.

She admitted: “Lincoln struggled most with his fear of heights, while I struggled with my fears of being underwater and of maths.

“The show reinforced that we prefer to do things together and that now includes working. We’ve always seen ourselves as an unbreakable couple and it was nice to show that to other people because many have doubted us.”

Touching on why he wanted to create the show, Rob admitted to being obsessed with people and their partner’s dynamics.

He told Daily Mail: “I love nothing more than leaving a party and gossiping with my wife Lou about the other couples and how they behaved, or how their kids behaved.

“This show is perfect for that as it puts all kinds of pressure on the different couples to see how they react. I was surprised by how competitive they all were, they all really wanted to win.”

Unbreakable airs Thursday, October 6 from 8pm on BBC One.
