Wednesday – Netflix

Fans of that famously creepy, kooky, mysterious, spooky and all together ooky family are in for a treat. Legendary director Tim Burton takes the reins for this brilliantly gloomy new supernatural mystery comedy series, which follows the high-school misadventures of Morticia and Gomez’s disdainful teenage daughter Wednesday.

Having got herself expelled from yet another school, Wednesday (Jenna Ortega) is enrolled – unwillingly – by parents Morticia (Catherine Zeta Jones) and Gomez (Luis Guzman) at the foreboding Nevermore Academy, the very same school where they met as teenagers. A school for “outcasts, freaks, monsters,” as one character puts it, Wednesday even struggles to fit in there, until a series of violent deaths sets her off on a mission to find out who, or what, is behind the killings.

Drenched in deliciously dark, deadpan humour and splattered with glorious amounts of gore, it’s everything you’d want from a modern Addams Family spin-off. Jenna revels in the role of snarky Wednesday and the series also features great cameos from Gwendoline Christie as Nevermore’s head teacher Principal Weems and Christina Ricci – who famously played Wednesday in the 90s big-screen versions of the story – as prim teacher Marylin Thornhill.

The Guardians Of The Galaxy Holiday Special – Disney+

What do you give an intergalactic, half-human half-Celestial superhero for Christmas? That’s the dilemma facing the Guardians Of The Galaxy gang as they set out to get their leader Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) the perfect present in this festive one-off. With Peter still mourning the loss of Gamora (Zoe Saldana), the team – including Nebula (Karen Gillan), Drax (Dave Bautista), Mantis (Pom Klementieff), Rocket (Bradley Cooper) and Groot (Vin Diesel) – make a beeline to Earth to find something (or should that be some) special to cheer him up. Featuring a very funny cameo from Kevin Bacon, amazing effects and a Santa’s sack worth of surprises, it’s a warm-hearted seasonal sci-fi treat.

Rebekah vs Coleen: The Wagatha Trial – Discovery+

Anyone still mourning the long-departed but fondly-remembered Footballers’ Wives must have pinched themselves when the so-called Wagatha Christie trial came to court back in May. Famously, the case saw Rebekah Vardy, wife of Leicester City star Jamie, suing her former friend and fellow WAG Coleen Rooney for libel, after Coleen claimed Rebekah had sold stories from her private Instagram. Juicy. This two-part special examines the case in microscopic detail, talking to family members, close friends, journalists, the legal teams and digital forensic experts, in an attempt to determine where the truth lies.

Below Deck – hayu

‘Stud of the sea’ Captain Lee is joined by Chef Rachel and the newly promoted Chief Stew Fraser as the team take charge of the largest vessel in Below Deck history, St David. They’re setting sail to the beautiful island of St Lucia, but it’s going to be far from easy as Fraser must prove himself and Rachel creates some of her finest dishes yet. There’s also plenty of new staff on board, including ladies' man Bosun Ross, and Captain Lee is set to rock the boat as he makes a shocking decision…

Echo 3 – Apple TV+

While most action series trade emotions for explosions, Echo 3 stands out for trying to balance both. Based on an Israeli series called When Heroes Fly, the 10-part thriller tells the story of scientist Amber (Jessica Ann Collins), who goes missing on the Colombia-Venezuela border while on a research trip.

Worried for her safety, Amber’s protective husband Prince (Michiel Huisman) and devoted brother Bambi (Luke Evans) – both black ops soldiers from the same squadron – team up in an attempt to find out what’s happened, where she is and to get her home. On the face of it, Prince and Bambi should be the perfect combo for this highly dangerous and very personal operation – but a falling out over the tragic death of one of their comrades during a previous mission has driven a wedge between them. Can they put the past behind them in order to save Amber?

What follows is an adventure filled with heart-in-your-mouth action sequences, breath-taking visuals, lies, betrayal and gritty but layered performances from the leads. There’s a strong supporting cast too, which includes a cameo from Bradley Whitford (The West Wing) and some stunning international locations – from snow-capped mountains to dense Colombian jungles. Indeed, watching it unfold with pace, heart and an epic, cinematic scope, it comes as little surprise that the show is the creation of Oscar-winning screenwriter Mark Boal, who wrote The Hurt Locker and Zero Dark Thirty. So buckle up for a nerve-shredding, highly bingeable ride.

A fantastic ensemble cast star in this explosive World War II drama about the formation of the SAS. Irreverent, brash and unashamedly violent with a great soundtrack, it’s easy to draw comparisons with creator Steven Knight’s other celebrated hit Peaky Blinders.

Disenchanted – Disney+

The long-awaited sequel to much-loved 2007 Disney movie Enchanted finds Princess Giselle (voiced by Amy Adams), her hubby Robert (Patrick Dempsey) and stepdaughter Morgan moving from Manhattan to the suburbs, where the mysterious Malvina Monroe (Maya Rudolph) plots to make their lives a misery. Magical, marvellous fun.

1899 – Netflix

It’s an unwritten rule of TV and movies that bad things happen to anyone who discovers an abandoned ship drifting in the ocean. That’s certainly the case in this super-sinister new thriller about the crew and passengers of a 19th-century steamer waylaid on its voyage to New York.

The English – BBC iPlayer

Emily Blunt stars alongside Native American actor Chaske Spencer in this epic, violent and romantic Western drama about a grieving 19th-century Englishwoman desperate to avenge the death of her son in an unforgiving land. Also features Toby Jones, Stephen Rea, Rafe Spall and Tom Hughes.

Star Wars: Tales Of The Jedi – Disney+

The force is strong with this latest Star Wars spin-off, an animated series following the adventures of Jedis Ahsoka Tano (voiced by Ashley Eckstein) and Count Dooku (Corey Burton). Filled with familiar characters, including Qui-Gun Jinn (Liam Neeson) and Darth Sidious (Ian McDiarmid), it’s already proving a hit with fans.
