The Wonderful Story Of Henry Sugar

Available from Wednesday

Acclaimed Hollywood director Wes Anderson is the man behind this adaptation of Roald Dahl’s magical short story about a gambler called Henry Sugar, who learns how to see with his eyes closed – a skill that changes his outlook on the world. Clocking in at a breezy 37 minutes, it promises to be short but sweet, featuring a fantastic cast that includes Benedict Cumberbatch in the title role, Ralph Fiennes as Roald himself, Rupert Friend, Ben Kingsley, Dev Patel and Richard Ayoade. Of course, this isn’t the first time that Wes has adapted one of Dahl’s stories – his stop-motion animation version of Fantastic Mr Fox is a charming and witty treat – so lots is expected of this latest production.

Virgin River filming locations – from Snug Cove to Squamish

Available from Tuesday

When newsreader Jill Dando was shot dead on her own doorstep in 1999, the brutal and senseless crime sent shockwaves across the nation. No one could understand why this much-loved and very familiar face from British TV had been murdered – or who might have been behind it. The subsequent homicide investigation became one of the biggest in British history, but despite the painstaking inquiry and weeks of media coverage, the case has never been solved. Nearly a quarter of a century later, this three-part documentary takes a deep dive into the case, talking to family, friends, journalists, investigators and lawyers. Don’t go expecting too many dramatic new revelations, but it’s still likely to be a gripping watch.

For some people – of a certain age – the name Castlevania will bring back happy memories of hours spent playing the original 1980s vampire-slaying computer game. It spawned many sequels and, eventually, a 2017 adult animated TV series of the same name. Now here comes a spin-off from that series, an eight-part animated fantasy adventure set in late 18th-century France during the height of the French Revolution. The aristocracy has joined forces with a terrifying Vampire Messiah, who agrees to help crush the revolution by unleashing an army of bloodthirsty vampires. It seems only one man can stand in their way – Richter Belmont (voiced by Edward Bluemel), the last descendant of a legendary family of vampire hunters. Enjoyably over-the-top manga thrills.

Encounters

Available from Wednesday

With the US government releasing UFO-related reports and military whistleblowers making claims about supposed alien vehicles in the possession of the American authorities, the subject of extraterrestrials is back near the top of the news agenda. So what better time for this four-part series exploring incredible true stories that appear to involve otherworldly close encounters? From underwater craft terrorising a coastal Welsh village, to schoolchildren encountering aliens in Zimbabwe, strange light over a small town in Texas, and non-human intelligence interfering with a nuclear power plant in Japan, the stories are told from the perspective of the people who lived them and feature contributions from scientists and military personnel. The truth is out there.

Love Is In The Air

Available from Thursday

Delta Goodrem and Kylie’s ex Joshua Sasse star in this picturesque romcom, which has an enjoyably original set-up. Dana (Delta) is a pilot working for a non-profit airline that provides essential transportation for local island communities in far-north Queensland, Australia. There’s a cloud headed her way, however, in the handsome shape of London-based financial officer William (Joshua), who’s been sent with a secret mission: to review the airline’s finances, with a view to shut it down. But when William falls in love with Dana – and the local community – his loyalties are torn. And when Dana discovers William’s mission, the couple hit some serious turbulence. Easy-going romantic fun.

The Devil’s Plan

Available from Tuesday

We like to think we’re pretty good at competitive reality shows here in Britain, but South Korea is really leading the way right now. This year already it’s given us imaginative shows such as Zombieverse and Physical 100, and now here is The Devil’s Plan. Twelve contestants – including K-Pop star Boo Seung-kwan – live together in a specially designed compound for a week, competing in tough, pressurised mental challenges and puzzles. And the contestant who can outwit the others and emerge victorious will take home a huge cash prize. Think a mash up of The Crystal Maze and Big Brother and you’ll be on the right lines.

Power Rangers Cosmic Fury

Available from Friday

It’s morphin’ time! The Power Rangers are back and this time they’re headed into space. Following on from 2021’s Power Rangers: Dino Fury, the new series finds the gang exploring the furthest reaches of the cosmos in an attempt to defeat infamous villain Lord Zedd. Promising the usual high-kicking, action-packed excitement, there will also be some surprises, not least Pink Ranger Amelia Jones (Hunter Deno) becoming the Red Ranger – the first time a female has led the Rangers – and Fern from Dino Fury becoming the very first Orange Ranger. In a move that’s sure to please long-time fans of the show, Billy – the Blue Ranger from Mighty Morphin Power Rangers – will be returning after 25 years. Go, go, Power Rangers!

After trying to tempt him with an old acoustic guitar, Flora finds her own life being changed by learning the instrument – thanks to some online lessons with jaded LA rock star Jeff (Joseph Gordon-Levitt). The legendary Captain Sandy Yawn is back once again, in charge of the magnificent, 55m-long Mustique, and she’s joined by some new faces, including Chef Jack Luby, as well as some old hands, such as Second Stews Kyle Viljoen and Nat Scudder, and Chief Stew Tumi Mhlongo, who viewers might recognise from Below Deck Down Under.
