NBC’s crime thriller hit the screens with a two-year time jump following an unexpected death and viewers noticed Red Reddington (played by James Spader) and Dembe Zuma (Hisham Tawfiq) weren’t as close and according to the showrunner, fans will soon understand why.

When season nine aired, viewers got an insight into what each character had been up to during the two-year time jump following Liz Keen’s (Megan Boone) death.

Within that time the FBI taskforce had also disbanded which explained why everyone was focused on different things.

However, since Harold Cooper (Harry Lennix) brought everyone back together, viewers noticed Red and Dembe who were once inseparable, had become very distant.

While viewers can only recall the only time Dembe left was to discover his purpose, fans questioned what happened within those two years.

Thankfully, according to executive producer John Elsendrath, all questions will be answered soon enough.

In an interview with TV Line, he revealed: “There will be an episode this season in which we look back on Dembe’s journey during the two years, between the end of Season 8 and the beginning of Season 9.

“It will not only reveal what drove a wedge between Dembe and Red, but also tell the story of how Dembe became an FBI agent,” he added.

This could potentially be in a flashback episode, so fans can get the full picture of if the two had a major falling out and what it could’ve been about.

During the premiere which aired earlier this month, it was revealed Dembe had taken on a new job as a special agent with the FBI.

He had been working undercover for six months to infiltrate a group of dangerous criminals who were suspiciously after some valuable microchips.

However, things went wrong after a meeting with the members alongside Dembe’s FBI partner took a left turn.

This resulted in the death of his partner and third-degree burns across his body after the van containing the stolen microchips suddenly exploded.

This led to the task force coming back together after Harold was able to track each member down and have them agree to find the leader of the criminals.

Initially, Dembe thought Red could know something about the gang, however, Red had been hiding out in Havana and the two had not spoken for 18 months.

Although they uncovered the ring leader was The Skinner, an alias passed down to criminals for centuries.

They also learnt, Red knew the previous Skinner and therefore wasn’t willing to help Harold find the current one, even though Dembe landed in the hospital because of them.

Instead, Red only returned to the country to identify the Skinner but backed out of tracing and eventually arresting them.

Red told Cooper: “I fear all that work will be for nothing, down the line, things would get very dark.”

Despite the lack of Red’s resources, the new task force was formed and they were able to work together to track down the skinner.

Thankfully, viewers will soon be able to find out the real reason Dembe and Red went their separate ways, and if Red’s move to Havana was solely based on Liz’s death.

The Blacklist season 9 continues Thursday, December 9 on NBC.
