While Queen Elizabeth II remained in power for 70 years, there were 15 Prime Ministers who she worked alongside during this time. The Netflix period drama will see England during its next phase in the political world, following the downfall of Margaret Thatcher (played by Gillian Anderson). Here’s everything there is to know about who is taking on the role of her successor, John Major.

Who plays John Major in The Crown season 5?

Sir John Major is going to be played by actor Jonny Lee Miller, after briefly being portrayed by actor Marc Ozall in season four.

Miller is probably best recognised for Sick Boy in Danny Boyle’s movie Trainspotting and its sequel T2 Trainspotting.

His biggest role to date has been as Sherlock Holmes in the CBS adaptation, Elementary.

He starred in the series for seven years before it came to an end in 2019.

Some of his other work has been in Dexter, Dark Shadows, Mansfield Park, Emma, Eli Stone, Settlers and Alice.

Miller was married to movie star Angelina Jolie in the late 1990s for three years before getting hitched to Orange is the New Black star, Michele Hicks.

They were married for 10 years before getting divorced in 2018 and have one son together, Buster Timothy Miller.

Plenty of focus will be on Major during the fifth season of The Crown as he remained in power for most of the 1990s.

He came into office in November 1990 when Thatcher resigned after there was a challenge to her leadership.

Major was Prime Minister for seven years as he won a second term in the 1992 election but lost by a landslide in 1997 when Tony Blair led Labour to victory.

Series five will see Major’s perspective, fearing that the divorce of Prince Charles (Dominic West) and Princess of Diana (Elizabeth Debicki) could threaten national stability.

He is going to be seen acting as an intermediary during their split, midway through the series.

Major is also going to be seen negotiating with the then-President of Russia, Boris Yeltsin.

He will be speaking to Yeltsin to try and locate the remains of the Russian Royal Family who were killed in 1918.

Major is assisting the royals in this matter in order to give them a proper burial following their deaths.

The real-life former Prime Minister doesn’t seem to be too happy about his involvement in the upcoming drama though.

In a statement released in October 2022, a spokesperson for Major said: “Sir John has not cooperated – in any way – with The Crown.

“Nor has he ever been approached by them to fact-check any script material in this or any other series.

“Discussions between the monarch and prime minister are entirely private and – for Sir John – will always remain so.”

The Crown season 5 premieres on Wednesday, November 9, on Netflix.
