Hulu’s dystopian drama The Handmaid’s Tale’s latest season came to an end with a shocking twist that saw June Osborne (played by Elisabeth Moss) on the same train as her enemy Serena Joy (Yvonne Strahovski). With them both escaping the wrath of Gilead, creator Bruce Miller revealed the deeper meaning of the episode.
June and Serena have been enemies since season one back when June was ripped from her family and placed in Gilead to work as a handmaid.
As an instrumental part of Gilead’s creation, Serena and her husband Fred Waterford (Joseph Fiennes) reaped the benefits while June was tortured in her home.
After her countless attempts at freedom, June was finally able to reunite with her husband Luke Bankole (OT Fagbenle) and best friend Moira Strand (Samira Wiley) in season four.
She and other ex-handmaids got their revenge as they beat Fred to death and sent his finger to Serena in the mail.
After June let off gunshots outside the Gilead Information Center in Canada where a pregnant Serena was working, she was rushed to the home of Ryan (Lucas Neff) and Alanis Wheeler (Genevieve Angelson).
After realising the Wheelers would soon claim her baby, she planned an escape which saw her about to witness June’s execution at the hands of henchman Ezra Shaw (Rossif Sutherland).
In the final moments, Serena asked for the gun and as she pointed it at June, she made a split decision and shot Ezra.
Knowing June was her only chance at safety she demanded her to drive but soon realised she was in labour.
After June helped her give birth, the two parted ways at the hospital where Serena was arrested and June back with Luke.
The couple had been fighting their own battles as refugees after Canadian residents made it clear they were no longer welcome.
Their apprehension soon turned to fear after Luke accidentally killed a man who was sent by Gilead to kill June.
By the time Luke noticed the commotion outside his house, June had already been run over twice and thankfully they were able to secure a place on a train headed to Hawaii.
As they were about to board, Luke was apprehended leaving June to move to Hawaii with their toddler Nichole and a broken arm.
Towards the final moments, June could hear another child crying on the busy train and she walked towards the wails only to be face to face with Serena and her crying newborn,
Speaking on the reunion, the showrunner Bruce revealed: “I think that moment came about naturally.
“I think when I saw episode seven or read the script for that episode where Serena is giving birth and June is there, I knew the season was cooking the way I wanted.
“It seemed like they should be together again in the end. Their need to get out of Toronto gradually became the same.“
He continued: “And I think that all the things that are happening this season with the tensions between Canadians and Americans growing leads us to this finale.
“I just wanted it to feel like I wasn’t pulling them together; there was an inevitability about it because they’re in the same situation.
“Their lives look and feel like each other’s even if morally they’re very different. Oh, and they’re not friends, they are familiar faces,” Bruce added to Deadline.
The Handmaid’s Tale seasons 1-5 are available to stream on Hulu in the US and on All4 in the UK.
