Viking warrior Rognvaldr (played by Micki Stoltt), the brother of fan-favourite Sigtryggr (Eysteinn Sigurðarson) played a key role in the action during the fifth and final season of The Last Kingdom. Although his time on the Netflix historical series was shortlived, working with Stiorra star Ruby Hartley certainly took its toll.

Actor Micki admitted he was left rather sore after one particularly gruelling scene with Ruby.

In season five, Sigtryggr forms his own community with his wife, Stiorra, and Rognvaldr arrives seeking refuge.

However, his brother soon realises Rognvaldr has ulterior motives and had tried to infiltrate his new home to kill Stiorra.

Although Sigtryggr doesn’t have it in him to kill his own brother, he does force Rognvaldr to walk nine steps while carrying a hot iron bar.

Later, Rognvaldr ends up passing out in his dinner, prompting Stiorra to lift his head up before forcefully dropping it back onto the table.

“Yeah! I told Ruby, ‘Just slam it down!’” Micki recalled about the scene.

Micki wanted their moment to feel as authentic as possible, which, unfortunately, left him with a bit of a headache.

He explained: “For some takes, she did that and I think, maybe, they’ve added the sound.”

“But I really wanted it to be like that, it’s just so much fun if she’s going for it.”

Thankfully, Micki was able to ensure the table didn’t make too much of an impact and his makeup team wasn’t left with a huge bruise to cover up between takes.

“Yeah, it hurt a little bit some of the time, but I was trying to prevent it from hurting too much,” he told the Screen Chronicles Podcast.

“Because I can’t walk around like that! With some big blue thing [on my head].”

“I was like, ‘Yeah, let’s just do it a couple of times then it’s going to be good’.”

Aside from the pain, laying in Rognvaldr’s dinner of traditional Viking goulash presented a number of issues.

Not only was the vegetarian actor forced to endure the smell of meat for the better part of a day, but the experience also became more unpleasant as the hours stretched on.

Micki joked: “I’m a vegetarian and laying in that cold meat sauce for several hours was just, ‘Oh, my God’.

“They had tried to heat it a little bit so it was a little bit warm for my face, but, like, after 10 minutes it was cold. And we had a couple of hours shooting that.

“I had it way up my nose! I was trying not to breathe too hard because I was, like, blowing bubbles in the goulash.”

Thankfully, Micki managed to keep it composed and this moment was undoubtedly one of the highlights of Rognvaldr’s short yet memorable stint on The Last Kingdom.

He even managed to escape the same fate as his brother Sigtryggr, so there’s a possibility Micki will soon be back in the upcoming feature film finale, Seven Kings Must Die.

The Last Kingdom seasons 1-5 are available to stream on Netflix. Seven Kings Must Die will be released in 2023.
