The 2018 book, The Tattooist of Auschwitz, by Heather Morris tells the heartbreaking real story of Slovakian Jew Lale Sokolov, who was imprisoned in Auschwitz in 1942. Based on the author’s interviews with the Holocaust survivor, his accounts were originally written as a screenplay, and will now be adapted in the form of a Sky Original drama starring The Last of Us’ Melanie Lynskey.
Lynskey will star as the novel’s author alongside Jonah Hauer-King and Anna Próchniak as Lale and his wife Gita Furman.
Jonas Nay also rounds out the main cast as Stefan Baretzki for the series, which is being produced by Synchronicity Films.
Award-winning filmmaker Tali Shalom-Ezer, known for Princess and My Days of Mercy, is on board to direct the series.
The novel has already sold more than 12 million copies worldwide, and now even more people will get to know Lale and Gita’s story.
As well as airing on Sky in the UK, the limited series is also set to be released to millions more viewers via Peacock in the USA.
Main cast member Lynskey most recently appeared as revolutionary leader Kathleen Coghlan in HBO’s hit adaptation of The Last of Us.
She will also be returning to screens very soon in the eagerly anticipated second season of Yellowjackets, in which she portrays the adult Shauna.
“After the horrors experienced at Auschwitz-Birkenau, the continuation of Lale and Gita Sokolov’s story is finding their new home,” Lynskey said of the upcoming drama.
“And it was years later in Australia Lale felt comfortable to share his story with New Zealand author Heather Morris.
“As a New Zealand storyteller in my own way, it is a privilege to be a part of the furthering of Lale’s and Gita’s heart-breaking, yet heart-warming story.”
Hauer-King will soon be known for his breakout role as Prince Eric in Disney’s live-action remake of The Little Mermaid, while Polish actress Próchniak has made a name for herself in the film Warsaw 44 and the TV series Baptiste.
Lead actor Hauer-King added: “It is a huge privilege to be telling Lale’s incredible story – one that he was so courageous to share.”

“I have the utmost respect and admiration for his ability to find humanity and kindness in the most inhumane of places.
“These scripts heartbreakingly and vividly depict this appalling time in our history, and I feel proud to be honouring Lale and Gita’s remarkable journey.”
And Próchniak said: “Reimagining Gita Sokolov and her story for screen has been one of the greatest honours of my career so far, as well as a heartrending experience.
“I know this won’t be an easy story to tell, but I will treat their story with the utmost respect.”
Finally, director Shalom-Ezer said: “In Auschwitz, a factory of death and dehumanisation, Lale and Gita’s love story is an act of defiance.
“It is the choice to remain human. I’m inspired and honoured to bring this story to life, alongside the talented team of people assembled.”
The series is currently in production, and is projected for release in 2024.
The Last of Us is available to stream on HBO Max in the USA and Sky Go and NOW in the UK.
