The Newsreader boss teases ‘personal dramas’ with intense scenes in season 2

The Newsreader: Anna Torv stars in season two trailer

The Newsreader creator Michael Lucas has revealed there are some big storylines ahead for the second season of the journalism drama.

In the first series of the Australian drama, which is shown on BBC Two, fans followed the story of TV anchors Helen Norville (played by Anna Torv) and Dale Jennings (Sam Reid).

Despite being established as the new golden couple of News at Six, it looks as though things won’t be plain sailing for the duo.

Speaking exclusively to Express.co.uk, show creator Michael Lucas teased there are some intense scenes on the way.

In the first episode of the new season, the country is preparing for the 1987 election as Helen and Dale are tasked with six hours of unbroken air time.

Touching on the intense scenes in the first instalment, Michael said: “The first episode, a huge amount of that episode takes place on an election night so it’s very much the thrill and the rush of live TV.

“Which is one of the hallmarks of the show that we like to return to.

“But, as the series goes on, I would say the personal dramas of the characters start to get more intense.

“Even though it is intense at first, it’s quite a lot of fun and quite a lot of comedy and I would say it takes some dramatic turns and personal crises start to hit the further we go.”

Picking up on the hint that there’s trouble ahead, Michael was asked if this is in relation to the show’s main stars, Helen and Dale.

Laughing, he replied: “We really put all the characters through it on this show!

“Definitely, they enter the series in a pretty good place, they’re the golden couple of news and everything is going pretty well for them.

“Needless to say, there’s a lot more scrutiny now and they’re going to face some pretty big challenges between them and the wider world.”

Tonight (November 9) will see the first episode of the new series with the second instalment continuing on Friday evening.

A synopsis for the next episode reads: “The country is rocked by an unprecedented mass shooting in Clifton Hill in Melbourne.

“Fuelled by adrenaline, the team rush to get the footage onto air – but their judgement is called into question.”

The Newsreader airs Thursday on BBC Two from 9pm.
