AMC’s acclaimed horror series, The Walking Dead is fast approaching its last-ever finale, although it’s a dreaded end for fans, many are eager to see how the show will end. With the expansion of the franchise, showrunner Angela Kang has shared whether the finale will link to any of the upcoming spin-offs.
The Walking Dead has remained a huge fan favourite after it first landed on screens in 2010.
Many of its viewers were fans of the original comic books created by Robert Kirkman, who tuned in to see if the series stayed true to the graphic novels.
The series also garnered fans from across the world with people enthralled to see which of their favourite characters would survive the outbreak.
The franchise expanded with its first spin-off, Fear the Walking Dead in 2015 and when The Walking Dead comes to an end there will be an additional three sequels.
Showrunner Angela Kang spoke to Express.co.uk and spoke on whether the finale will be set up for any of the upcoming spin-offs.
She teased: “They do and they don’t, we want to close the chapter on the show.
“So even if you’ve never watched any of the spin-offs, hopefully, you should still feel like there was some sort of closure that happened.
“But there are doors left open for spin-offs that is for sure,” Angela confirmed.
Thankfully for fans, they will get to see the continuation of some characters after the Walking Dead comes to an end.
An untitled series focused on Daryl Dixon (played by Norman Reedus) will premiere in 2023 and will take place in Paris, France.
The series was also supposed to feature his close friend Carol Peletier (Melissa McBride) but the actress quit the show as she was not able to relocate to Europe.
Maggie (Lauren Cohan) and Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) will also get their own spin-off, which will follow the unlikely pair as they travel to a “post-apocalyptic Manhattan”.
The long-awaited return of Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) was announced as a film but will now become a six-episode series which will detail his journey with his wife Michonne Grimes (Danai Gurira).
The series will take place after Rick’s mysterious departure in season nine’s What Comes After, as well as Michonne’s journey to find him.
The press release revealed the show would “begin with six seasons,” seemingly hinting at the potential of more instalments.
These squeals will join the franchise of spin-offs which include Fear The Walking Dead, The Walking Dead: World Beyond and its anthology series, Tales of The Walking Dead.
Fans have long anticipated whether the finale will depict a similar end to its comic books, which came to an unexpected end in 2019.
Angela revealed: “Some of it correlates with the comics and some of it really diverges, it’s definitely true to some of the spirit of the comics.
“We had to interpret it in a different way since the show has taken so many different turns away from what the comics are.”
The showrunner also shared the finale episodes would have “big twists and turns,” as well as “lots of emotion and there’s going to be tears, but hopefully, those things you love about the show, we’ll deliver on those things, that’s our hope.”
The Walking Dead season 11 continues Sundays on AMC in the USA and the following Monday on Disney+ in the UK.
