Tracy-Ann Oberman teases possible return to EastEnders as Chrissie Watts

Tracy-Ann Oberman has teased a re-visit to Albert Square as Chrissie Watts, revealing how much she ‘loved’ playing her.

The 56-year-old actress had an explosive time on EastEnders back between 2004 and 2005 as the wife of legendary soaps villain ‘Dirty’ Den Watts (Leslie Grantham).

Her dramatic 218 episodes on the show included sniffing out her husband’s various affairs and taking part in a plot to bankrupt the Mitchell family with him, seizing the Queen Vic and moving in on Christmas Day.

She later killed him in an altercation at the pub, in which the pair exchanged blows, and was sent down for murder.

Appearing on Lorraine on Tuesday to chat about her new stage production, The Merchant of Venice 1936, in which she plays a reimagined version of Shylock, Oberman reminisced on her time in EastEnders.

Host Christine Lampard pointed out that people had been ‘doing the maths’ and realised Chrissie could be ‘due for parole at any point now’, inviting a perfect opportunity for Oberman’s return.

The actress quipped: ‘She’s served longer than most actual murdering prisoners and if she’d had a better lawyer, she would have got mitigating circumstanes!’

As Lampard suggested Chrissie might want to re-visit Walford, the It’s A Sin star added that she would go ‘into the Vic, just to look it over.’

Responding to the question of a return directly, she said: ‘Listen, what do they say? Never say never.’

‘I loved that character. She was a really… victim or villain?’

Last year, fans got their hopes up for Chrissie to appear once more after 17 years away when Sam Mitchell (Kim Medcalf), who featured heavily in the Den storyline, came back.

Oberman later took to Twitter to ask new EastEnders producer Chris Clenshaw to give her a follow.

Was a return discussed at that point? Nothing’s come of it yet, but with Oberman’s latest comments, all bets are off.

Lorraine airs weekdays at 9am.
