Leyla (Roxy Shahidi) has been free from drugs since her spell in rehab in Emmerdale last year, but recent events have put the wedding planner under pressure and in tonight’s episode it seemed that she was about to finally give in to her addiction again.
After being humiliated after suggesting to Liam (Jonny McPherson) that they should try again to rebuild their relationship, she was upset to get a visit from him. Far from being in a mood to reconcile, he asked her to hurry up and get the paperwork ready for the divorce, so they could both move on with their lives.
At a family lunch for Jacob (Joe-Warren Plant) in the Woolpack later, along with Pollard (Chris Chittell) and Brenda (Lesley Dunlop), David (Matthew Wolfenden) attempted to cheer his ex up, but his efforts to suggest being each others’ wingman now they’re both single only made her feel worse.
The final straw came with the arrival of Bernice (Samantha Giles). Brenda, who was a bit drunk after celebrating her and Pollard’s retirement, started to tease Bernice about dancing with Liam on New year’s Eve. She’d also heard about their Christmas kiss. ‘Christmas snog, new year’s boyfriend,’ she suggested.
‘It was a kiss, not a snog then he pulled away and puked over my shoes,’ Bernice corrected her. But Leyla, who’d overheard all this on her way back from the toilet, was angry and upset and decided she was going to go.
David, being unusually sensitive, called in to see her at Take A Vow to check that she was okay. She admitted to him that she wasn’t over Liam and she’d hoped they would grow old together.
When Liam visited later, he’d heard from Bernice about what happened in the Woolpack. He reassured Leyla that he wasn’t interested in getting back with Bernice.
This was only part of what Leyla wanted to hear. What she really wanted was for him to stay that he wanted to call off the divorce and give their marriage another try, but he just reiterated that he wanted to be friends.
Leyla lost it. Incensed and humiliated, she told him she didn’t want to be friends and ordered him to get out.
And then she went to her wardrobe and started rummaging through her bags looking for any drugs she might have overlooked.
Finding only an empty plastic bag she reached for her phone and called up her drug dealer Callum’s number. It looked like she may have cancelled the call as she burst into tears, but it’s clear she’s right on the edge of going back to taking drugs as the only way she knows of coping with the pressure and the pain.
Is Leyla headed for disaster?
