Based loosely on the Colombian telenovela Yo soy Betty, la fea, Ugly Betty became a huge hit after it landed in the mid-2000s.

The ABC comedy-drama series followed aspiring Mexican-American fashion journalist Betty Suarez (played by America Ferrera) from her humble beginnings in Queens, New York, after she landed a job at Mode working for the editor Daniel Meade (Eric Mabius).

Despite her adult braces, thick-rimmed glasses and quirky fashion choices, the ever-optimistic, somewhat naive and hard-working Betty won over audiences across the world.

The show ran for a total of four seasons between 2006 and 2010 before it was axed by ABC after declining ratings.

Nonetheless, Ugly Betty has developed a cult following in the years since it first aired and was groundbreaking in its representation of Latinx characters.

The CW comedy-drama Jane the Virgin and most recently Netflix’s Glamorous are just two shows Ugly Betty’s success paved the way for with global audiences seeing a Latinx family depicted on screen in a huge show.

In an exclusive interview prior to the Hollywood strikes with Ugly Betty star Luna Lauren Vélez, the actress better known in the show as Elena, shared her hopes for a reboot and possible comeback.

She said: “I would love that. That was the most fun I ever had. I was laughing on set all the time.

“Working with America Ferrera and Ana Ortiz – there’s something about going to set – and Tony Plana – they are all very, very funny people. So it was just a joy to go to work.

“I would love if there was a kind of reunion. That would be amazing.”

She went on to say about what a possible reunion could look like, joking “just crazy wackiness”.‌

Reflecting on the success of the show, she said: “You take this woman who’s a fish out of water and put her in this high-end fashion world and of course, it’s going to be hilarious to see how she straddles both worlds as we often do as first generation, whoever you are, whether you’re Latino or wherever you come from.”

But Vélez said at the heart of it was the humour of Ugly Betty, which made it such a hit with audiences.‌

There have previously been hopes Ugly Betty could be revived as a movie.

Since Ugly Betty finished, Vélez’s career has continued to flourish as she took on roles in Showtime’s hit series Dexter, How to Get Away with Murder and most recently Starz’s Power Book II: Ghost.

This year Vélez has also appeared in Transformers: Rise of the Beasts and Spider-Man: Across the Spiderverse.
