Who was Jamal Edwards?

Born on August 24, 1990, Jamal Edwards was a businessman, author, director, DJ, and the founder of the online music platform, SBTV.

Growing up in England, Jamal's mother, Brenda, was once a contestant on The X Factor and is now on the panel of Loose Women.

She encouraged her son to pursue a creative lifestyle, and he went on to attend Acton High School where he studied ICT and music.

He then studied at Ealing Green College, where he earned a BTEC Diploma in Media Moving Image.

While still a teenager, Jamal began to rap and record videos with his friends, sharing them on YouTube.

Jamal is credited with conducting some of the first online UK-based interviews with huge celebrities such as Drake and Nicki Minaj.

Ed Sheeran's new song, Eyes Closed, is a tribute to Jamal, who helped him launch his career.

In an Instagram post, Ed said the track was about "losing someone".

He wrote to his fans: "This song is about losing someone, feeling like every time you go out and you expect to just bump into them, and every thing just reminds you of them and things you did together.

“You sorta have to take yourself out of reality sometimes to numb the pain of loss, but certain things just bring you right back into it.”

Following the death of Jamal, Sheeran has vowed never to do drugs again.

What happened to Jamal Edwards?

An inquest has found that the late 31-year-old died of cardiac arrest following a late-night booze and cocaine session.

The reports say that three small snap bags containing small traces of white powder were found on Jamal after he collapsed.

Assistant West London Coroner Ivor Collett ruled that Edwards died after a cardiac arrest brought on by taking cocaine and drinking.

Edwards passed away on Sunday, February 20, 2022.

His heartbroken mother, Brenda Edwards, described him as "a beautiful and selfless person."

She added: “Our love for him lives on, his legacy lives on. Long live Jamal Edwards MBE, MBA, PHD."

Following the announcement of his passing, a series of tributes poured out for Jamal.

YouTube's official account stated: "Jamal Edwards was an inspiration to so many, supporting artists and shaping culture through SBTV."

Spoken word artist George the Poet wrote: "RIP Jamal Edwards. Giving God thanks that you did what he sent you to do.

"So many of us owe our careers to you bro. Thank you for everything."

London Mayor, Sadiq Khan, added: "British music and entertainment has lost one of its brightest stars."

The Mobo Awards wrote on Twitter: "We are deeply saddened to learn of Jamal Edwards passing.

"As the founder of SBTV online, his groundbreaking work & legacy in British music and culture will live on.

"Our hearts and thoughts are with his friends and family."

What is Jamal Edwards net worth?

According to Celebrity Net Worth, Jamal had an estimated net worth of around $ 10 million (£8.1m) at the time of his death.

Jamal has served as a model for brands such as Hermès, and launched his own headwear collection with Topman – a store he once worked at to save money for his music platform.

He also published an e-book in 2013, entitled Self Belief: The Vision: How To Be a Success on Your Own Terms.
