It’s often said that someone’s home is their castle, but it rarely refers to an actual castle – like this one that’s just gone on the market.

Bardowie Castle, situated in Milngavie, East Dumbartonshire, is one of the region’s most iconic homes, and is currently up for sale for £2,250,000.

Comprising eight bedrooms, ten bathrooms, seven acres of lochfront land, and two self-contained apartments, you’ll get a lot of space for your money.

It’s the history of this building that makes it unique, though.

The property was built in 1566, and still retains a mid-16th century Stone Keep alongside an original stone staircase and fireplaces.

Having been linked to Scottish folk hero Rob Roy MacGregor, this home is packed with character.

It also played host to actor Chris Pine, who rented the castle out for £20,000 a month during filming of a Netflix production about Robert the Bruce (where he played the titular character).

The property’s new owner will be treated to panoramic views of Bardowie Loch from their private jetty, tennis court, or private walled garden.

A reception hall leads into a snug, kitchen, and dining area, with a utility room and boot room accessible from a traditional stone staircase.

A games room, formal drawing room, bedroom, and master suite (containing a bedroom, dressing room, and bathroom with sauna) are all located on the first floor, while the second floor houses four more bedrooms (three of which are ensuite and two of which have dressing rooms).

Behind a hidden stone staircase you’ll find Scotland’s oldest Stone Keep, known as the Great Hall, which is two floors high. A turreted stairway leads to the castle’s battlements.

It’s suggested that the West Wing of the home, complete with a fully fitted gym and open kitchen living area, could be used as a self-contained apartment.

However, you will actually have access to another self-contained apartment, accessible via a separate entrance and complete with two en-suite bedrooms and a kitchen and lounge area.

Clyde Property, Bearsden, said the property was ‘a once in a generation opportunity to acquire one of Scotland’s most iconic homes’.

All of these architectural reminders of the Middle Ages may have you believing it’s a property secluded from modern life, but it’s less than three miles away from a large selection of amenities.

As well as this, it’s only seven miles away from Glasgow City Centre and has great links to Edinburgh, Stirling, and Central Scotland’s airports.

Essentially, while you can live like a king, it doesn’t need to be a reclusive Medieval one.
