A 74-year-old woman endured many people’s worst nightmare when she tumbled into an open grave and injured herself before waiting hours for help.
The elderly woman impaled herself on a rail through her thigh after suffering the fall at Maitland Cemetery on the Yorke Peninsula northeast of Adelaide.
Ambulance crews were called to help the woman shortly after 3pm on Monday.

The woman, a Maitland local, had been waiting for help for ‘a couple of hours’ according to South Australia Ambulance.
Although she had to be flown to hospital, her injuries were not believed to be life-threatening.
Maitland is a small town situated in the heart of the Yorke Peninsula about two hours’ drive from Adelaide.

The Yorke Peninsula is well known as a popular holiday destination with more than 700km of coastline and several stunning white sandy beaches.
Maitland has a population of just 1079 people, according to the 2021 census.
