Biden cheers U.S. win over Iran and tells Michigan in World Cup

‘They did it, god love them!’ Biden grabs a microphone and jumps on stage during rally to say ‘USA 1, Iran 0. We won!’ after finding out men’s national team went through – and reveals they told players ‘you can do this’

President Joe Biden delivered a big breaking news sports headline to a Michigan crowd after his speech Tuesday, broadcast the U.S. team’s win over Iran its World Cup match – leading a crowd in chants of U.S.A.!

The president had just wrapped up his remarks in Bay City, Michigan focused on the economy, gas prices, and foreign investment in chip manufacturing. He was glad handing with crowd members to the sound of ‘Stars and Stripes Forever when an aide appeared to convey the news.

That prompted Biden to retake the stage and announce the development – withe the U.S. team advancing to the critical round of 16. 

‘U.S. 1, Iran 0,’ Biden said,’ after the U.S. team held off Iran after scoring in the first half.

‘Hey, hey hey! USA. USA!’ the president gushed. 

”They did it! God love them,’ President Joe Biden said at an event in Bay City, Michigan, as the U.S. men’s soccer team advanced in the World Cup

‘That’s a big game, man,’ he continued, grinning. 

‘I spoke to the coach and the players. I said you can do this. They went ahh,’ Biden said, suggesting the U.S. team had its doubts about taking on Iran, the top ranked team in the Asia group.  

‘They did it! God love them,’ Biden said. ‘Anyway, just thought you might want to hear,’ he said, quickly exiting the stage – after photographers traveling with him captured the unusual appearance.

 Biden didn’t mention any of the freighted politics of the match. Iran has been undergoing repeated protests since the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini in police custody after being arrested by the ‘morality police’ who enforce dress and other matters.

The White House and the Biden administration have expressed repeated support for Iranian people who have protested in the streets demanding greater freedoms.

The U.S. and Iran have had tense relations ever since the 1979 Iranian revolution, and talks on the scrapped Iran nuclear deal have frozen. Iranian leaders have long tried to cast the U.S. as the ‘great Satan.’ 

The first fan had other White House support, even with much of the match taking place while Air Force One flew to Michigan and during Biden’s remarks.

The episode came at an event where Biden talked up the economy and investments by The South Korean company SK Siltron.

‘Inflation at the grocery stores, thank God, is beginning to slow. Prices for things like clothes, televisions and appliances are going down. That’s good news for the holiday season,’ Biden told the crowd. 

‘The middle class built America, and unions built the middle class,’ Biden said, after deciding to seek legislation to impose a contract a threatened rail union strike that could hurt the economy.

Second Gentleman Douglas Emhoff tweeted an image of himself and other fans cheering on the U.S. team in what appeared to be the Eisenhower Executive Office Building at the White House. 

In another indication the administration had its eye on the game, the State Department announced $1 billion arms sale to Cup host Qatar at halftime of the U.S.-Iran match.
