The UK is set to bring about its biggest change to UK drinking laws in the last five decades – and it is thanks to Brexit.

Under the new changes, champagne and wine will soon be sold by the pint. The pint sized punch was previously banned by Brussel's officials.

Sir Winston Churchill once claimed that a pint of champagne was “enough for two at lunch and one at dinner”. According to SunOnline, pre this outruling more than half of UK champagne sales were by the pint.

The pints were then outlawed in 1973 when the UK joined the European Common Market. Plans were originally set to bring the drinks back in 2021.

However, legal delays mean that it could now come back in 2024. The Department for Business and Trade has told other Whitehall sectors the ban will soon be lifted.

Government insiders say a consultation with the champagne and English sparkling wine industries is “imminent”. Changes to weights and measures legislation would then pave the way for pint-sized servings for all wines “early next year.”

A business department source said: “This is just the latest win from our push to ditch pointless and restrictive EU rules.
