Law enforcement officials in Larimer County have identified the man who was wounded by a sheriff’s deputy after a shootout on the east side of Fort Collins last week.
Bryan Erdbruegger, a 21-year-old Fort Collins resident, was released from a hospital and booked into the Larimer County Jail on Wednesday on charges that include two counts of attempted first-degree murder of a peace officer, officials said in an update released Friday. Additional booking charges included illegal discharge of a firearm and second-degree assault, both felonies, and a misdemeanor charge of speeding over 20 mph faster than the speed limit.
The conflict that ended in Erdbruegger being shot started when a Larimer County Sheriff’s deputy spotted a 2009 silver Ford Escape going fast on South Timberline Road at about 10:30 p.m. on July 12, according to a summary of events provided by Fort Collins Police Services, the agency leading the investigation into the shooting.
The deputy pulled the vehicle over on East Prospect Road and another deputy arrived to assist. At that point, the driver, now identified as Erdbruegger, opened fire with a handgun, Fort Collins police officials say. The deputies returned fire before Erdbruegger allegedly approached their vehicles on foot while still carrying the gun.
“A brief struggle ensued, during which a deputy fired his duty weapon, striking the suspect,” investigators said in Friday’s summary. “Erdbruegger was taken into custody and transported to an area hospital for treatment of injuries sustained during the incident.”
Neither of the deputies nor a K9 unit dog that was in one of the patrol cars was injured. A passing vehicle was struck by gunfire, but no one inside was hurt, according to the summary.
Officials did not specify if the shots that hit the passing vehicle were fired by Erdbruegger or the deputies. That detail remains part of the investigation, Fort Collins police spokeswoman Kate Kimble said Friday.
Specifics about where Erdbruegger was shot and the nature of his injuries also were not available Friday, Kimble said. In the aftermath of the shooting, officials said that he had suffered “serious injuries.”
The investigation, falling under the purview of the Eighth Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team, is ongoing. Investigators are asking anyone who saw a silver Ford Escape in the area of Timberline Road between 10 and 10:30 p.m. on July 12 to contact Fort Collins police Det. Justin Butler at 970-221-6340.

Erdbruegger remains in the Larimer County Jail, according to its website. He is being held on $200,000 bond. His next court date is Aug. 1.
