An actor who once appeared in Curb Your Enthusiasm has been charged with theft after surveillance footage caught him stealing comic books and hiding it under his T-Shirt at a San Diego store.
Ray Buffer was publicly shamed by Southern California Comics back in October as they uploaded the footage to their Facebook page and accused him of stealing around $850 worth of comics.
The store’s owners did not name Buffer, who has also appeared in an episode of ER, in their post.
But today the San Diego City Attorney’s Office confirmed he had been charged with petty theft relating to an offense which happened in January.
They added the arrest was connected to the October 4 incident too.
Southern California Comics uploaded a video appearing to show Buffer put a comic under his shirt – though they did not name him in the October post
The star has pleaded not guilty, officials told the New York Post.
Video footage shows Buffer wearing a blue and white striped T-shirt lurking in the corner of the store.
He is then seen rifling through stacks of the comic books before sliding one underneath his shirt.
The store uploaded the footage alongside a caption that said: ‘If this guy looks familiar please contact us. Thank you!’
Buffer starred in one episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm in 2004 called ‘Ben’s Birthday Party,’ according to his IMDB page.
He played the role of the ‘stage manager’ and appeared in scenes with Ben Stiller.
In a clip, star Larry David is seen giving Stiller a red shirt as a birthday present in front of Buffer’s stern-faced character.
Southern California Comics owner Jamie Newbold said he only discovered Buffer had been charged on Wednesday when he received a call from the city attorney.
‘I thought this case got swept under or out of the way,’ Newbold told the Post.
‘Now I realize the case matters, therefore what I’ve had to go through matters.
‘I was losing hope every month I didn’t hear anything from anyone,’ he added.
Buffer posted on Instagram just yesterday with a shot of him drinking a beer in a hot tub
He later uploaded a shot of him going to watch Antman with a woman he called ‘my babe’
‘He gets off really light if the courts allow him to pay for the crime financially. I would prefer that he sees justice.’
He claimed he only shared the video on social media to warn other comic book stores in the area.
Other businesses then identified the suspect as Buffer who Newbold estimates stole 10 comics worth around $850.
A readiness conference in San Diego Superior Court is scheduled for Tuesday Feb 28.
The case involving Buffer was filed on December 13, 2022.
Another comic store has claimed Buffer stole from them in September, reports The Post.
Buffer is pictured with Cuba Gooding Jr on the set of ‘Instinct’. The picture appears on his IMDB page
Buffer’s IMDB page lists minor roles in episodes of CSI: Miami, Gilmore Girls and Cold Case.
He posted to his Instagram as recently as yesterday, uploading a shot of him enjoying a beer in a hot tub before later going to watch the new Antman film with a woman he called ‘my babe.’
