Daredevil climate protestors manage to scale 100ft steel horse monument

Daring protestors managed to get to the top of a whopping 100ft-high metal horse’s head to make their point.

Using special climbing equipment, two activists from This Is Rigged scaled the enormous Helix Park’s Kelpie statue in Falkirk.

Remarkable footage shows the protestors climbing up the huge steel head while astonished onlookers gawp with surprise.

Police were called to the incident, which saw the pair unfurl a banner which said on it “This Is Rigged”, reports The Daily Record.

One protestor, 22-year-old Lewis, gave an explanation for his decision to get involved with the remarkable action.

He said: “In Scottish folklore, Kelpies are water spirits which lure people to a watery grave. As the Scottish Government continues to allow oil and gas licences to go ahead in Scotland, they're leading us to the same fate.

“This means unemployment, insecurity and exploitation for workers as well as fossil-fueled climate collapse. Horses powered our past and renewables power our future. Continuing fossil fuel extraction will power nothing but our death.”

His co-climber, 22-year-old Hannah, also spoke about why she had done what she did.

“The Kelpies is a monument to the horses and the people who’ve worked to develop our industry and agriculture to where it is today, yet the Scottish government is now leaving our oil workers without support for a fair transition to renewables," she explained.

“The land on which The Kelpies were built will be submerged underwater by 2050. Isn't this a bit ironic?”

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “We are aware of two protestors who have climbed The Kelpies, at Helix Park in Falkirk. Officers are in attendance."

A statement from the Helix said: “The Helix and Kelpies are currently closed. This is due to an ongoing Police Scotland operation involving two individuals who have scaled the structures.

“Public safety is always our first concern, we will update our social media channels as soon as the park is safe to re-open.”

This Is Rigged want to end the fossil fuel industry in Scotland.
