Deborah Meaden accused of hypocrisy over climate change after she used a BBC event to lecture on saving the planet – while previously holidaying in far-flung locations

Deborah Meaden has been accused of hypocrisy over her climate change stance after she used a BBC event to lecture on saving the planet – while previously holidaying in far-flung locations.

At a Bupa eco-Disruptive event in London, the Dragons’ Den star told the BBC that time is running out on climate change, saying: ‘I have been concerned about sustainability and climate change for a very long time but it’s always something that was going to happen way in to the future – of course it isn’t, it’s happening now.’

‘It is here and now, and we need to deal with it here and now, and not think we’ve got time.’

The businesswoman also highlighted how she and others in business began to raise concerns around six years ago, saying they ‘now know more about the planetary impact’.

But critics on social media app Twitter have queried Ms Meaden over her prior visits to a string of long-haul destinations.

Ms Meaden, 64, has spoken about trips to the USA, Australia, Mexico, Botswana and South America.

On Twitter, user Unity News Net highlighted Ms Meaden’s globe-trotting history, saying: ‘Deborah Meaden is being hailed by the BBC on her concerns on climate change and peoples’ carbon footprint’, before pointing out an interview published in 2022 where she speaks about her travel.

Ms Meaden responded to the tweet with fury, stating that she ‘hasn’t flown long haul in nearly six years’ and claims the interview was first published in 2012. 

She added that ‘a lot has changed since then’.
