Dense fog blankets Britain: Met Office says flights could be CANCELLED

Travel chaos as dense fog blankets Britain: Met Office warns flights could be CANCELLED while drivers face ‘difficult conditions’ due to mist and frost with icy eastern winds dragging temperatures to near FREEZING today

Britain has been warned of ‘difficult driving conditions’ and possible flight cancellations this morning as a thick blanket of fog covers much of the country, while frost and eastern winds see temperatures plummet to as low as 1C.

The Met Office has issued a yellow warning over a huge swathe of England due to the mist, covering Bath, Cardiff, parts of outer west London, Birmingham, Nottingham, Hull and elsewhere.

The weather service told commuters to expect ‘slower journey times with delays to us and train services possible.’

‘There is a chance of delays or cancellations to flights,’ it added.

The yellow warning for fog was extended early this morning to include more parts of eastern Wales, the east Midlands and Vale of York.

Meteorologist Aidan McGivern said: ‘We do have this extensive area of low cloud, mist and fog patches through central and southern parts of the UK.

‘Unlike Thursday though, the increased easterly breeze that develops through the day will lift it and as a result a brighter afternoon is expected although still with a lot of cloud cover.

‘Increasingly we will see showers moving in on that easterly breeze across eastern parts of England as well as eastern Scotland.’

It comes as the mercury dropped to 1C in Barnstaple this morning as the dense fog kept temperatures low in the south and west, with the likes of Wrexham, Salisbury and London recording 2C, 3C and 5C respectively.

Temperatures will recover this afternoon with the capital and central England areas seeing highs of between 5C and 8C.

However areas least affected by the fog, such as the very tip of Scotland in Stromness and the south west corner of the country will both see highs of 10C today.
