Deadliest catch! Incredible video shows hundreds of sharks feeding on ‘bait ball’ of tuna under Louisiana fishing boat as stunned fishermen look on

This wild video shows hundreds of hungry sharks feasting on a ‘bait ball’ of tuna under a Louisiana fishing boat as stunned fishermen aboard look on. 

Dillion May and his girlfriend Kaitlyn Dix were out fishing on a friend’s boat off the coast of Venice, Louisiana – hoping to catch some yellowfish tuna – when suddenly their vessel was surrounded by swarms of hungry sharks.

May drove over to where the feeding frenzy was taking place, about 15 miles off the coast, trying to snag some fish too. There he witnessed the sharks chasing the menhaden pod and then using the sides of his boat to hold down and devour the captured fish as the ocean water was spraying frenetically. 

The young fisherman, dressed in a hooded windbreaker, was in awe and though he was drenched, he didn’t seem to mind, the commotion.

‘We saw it was sharks on a bait pod …never seen anything like it … no shrimp boats were in sight either!,’ he told Storyful.

May said that he originally thought all the chaos happening in the ocean was a tuna boil, a term used to describe a feeding frenzy, that makes the water appear to be boiling.

But as he got closer, he saw what was really happening.

‘By the time we got there the sharks had found the pod and pushed them up against the boat to feast on them,’ he said.

Though it is unclear the type of sharks that were in the waters. The bull shark, bull tips, hammerheads and spinners typically inhabit the Louisiana waters. 

Menhaden, also called Pogy, Fatback and Mossbunker, that the sharks were eating come from the herring family. They live in the coastal and estuarine waters from Nova Scotia to Florida.

Menhaden’s typically swim in large schools close to the water’s surface during the spring, summer, and fall. The months of December through February is their peak season.

After May posted his video to TikTok – adding the AC/DC song ‘Thunderstruck’ for some added effects – and the caption: ‘Never seen anything like this,’ many fishing enthusiasts – or not – chimed in.

 ‘Can’t imagine the size of the bait ball underwater,’ said a person by the name Bad Ass Engineer.

‘Ha… Just saw this on the news pretty amazing,’ said another. 

One viewer joked:  ‘When you change your status to ‘single.’

But, others didn’t think the video was very funny at all but instead terrifying.

‘I’m scared just watching this,’ someone quipped.

Another added:  ‘Oh …that’s a big hell NO for me.’
