An Emirates Stadium DJ is the latest disc jockey to come under fire after playing Wham’s festive hit ‘Last Christmas’ at an Arsenal Women’s game attended by nearly 60,000 people yesterday.
Fans have fumed that by doing so, thousands will have lost the holiday game ‘Whamaggedon’ – where people try to avoid the song for as long as possible in the run up to Christmas.
Once the song is heard, that person is eliminated – hence the frustration of the record 59,042 crowd on Sunday attending their clash with Chelsea Women.
Taking to social media to vent their frustration, one fan wrote: ‘Really annoyed with Arsenal Women and Emirates Stadium at half time.
‘Making me lose Whamageddon like this isn’t how I wanted it to happen.’

Another joked: ‘50,000 + and everyone watching at home have just been Whamageddon’ed by whoever is in charge at the Emirates Stadium.

A third complained: ‘Emirates Stadium DJ, have a word with yourself #Whamageddon’.
A fourth said: ‘DJ at the Emirates for Arsenal Women v Chelsea Women just knocked out 58,000 fans & millions watching on BBC Two from #Whamageddon #Whamageddon2023 by playing Wham’s Last Christmas during half time. Not funny, and inexcusable. @ArsenalWFC @AlexScott @Gilly_flaherty #BBCFootball’.
A fifth joked: @absoluteradio Just like the Chelsea women’s team, I got whammed at the Emirates Stadium.
‘Another stadium DJ potentially ruining it for thousands of people. Sad times. #Whamageddon is over for another year.’
Many took to social media to vent their frustration
It comes after Northampton Town’s DJ was forced to apologise after playing ‘Last Christmas’ at a recent match.
‘I never knew people took it so seriously,’ said Matt Facer, also known as DJ Matty.
‘I gave it a spin, thinking it would be quite funny to wipe out 7,000 people who couldn’t avoid it, but clearly it isn’t funny.
‘I had a bit of an insult on Twitter, light-hearted, [saying] it was not a nice thing to do, and apparently that was quite tame to what was being said in the stadium.
‘So I officially apologise to everybody whose Christmas I’ve ruined.’
‘DJ Matty’ has since promised fans that he will not ruin the game for anyone else, especially those who attended their 3-0 win over Fleetwood Town on Saturday.
He told BBC Radio Northampton: ‘I can take on the chin with my home fans and Portsmouth, but I don’t think I’ll be playing it again.
‘I think it’s a shame people in professions like mine can’t play Wham! until [late] December, but it’s a game and we all have to jump on board.’

Last Christmas reached number two on its release, finally reaching the top spot on 1 January 2021.
The game ‘Whamageddon’ started approximately 10 years ago and has continued to grow in popularity since then, namely through social media.
In the present day, the game has set rules, a dedicated website and merchandise.
The game’s rules state: ‘While we can’t stop you from deliberately sending your friends to Whamhalla, the intention is that this is a survival game. Not a Battle Royale.’
