Ex-soldier forced to live in council flat with poo-smeared door and bullet hole

A retired soldier who’s had his council flat shot at and had poo smeared all over his front door has slammed the council for putting him in a flat that’s “not fit to live in”.

Paul Sheard, 67, who lives in the Seacroft district of Leeds and describes himself as “absolutely poverty stricken”, says he’s been terrorised by local yobs since he moved in in 2009 and fears for his life following “13 years of relentless abuse”.

Paul claims the flat is “derelict” and mouldy – and he says the council hasn’t kept its promise to improve the building, reports Leeds Live.

He has covered the flat with art but the mould still finds its way through the brightly coloured pieces.

“There is a bullet hole in my window frame. That’s not even the worst of the problems,” Paul said.

“It’s not fit to live in. Where has the money been going? This isn’t a simple case of disrepair, it’s a case of wilful neglect since the property was built.

“When I first arrived there in 2009, it had the original single paned windows in. There’s a tenancy agreement which tells me they’ll give me a healthy safe place to live.

“I’m up there, on my own, not very well and vulnerable, isolated and absolutely poverty stricken because I can’t get what I’m owed. The council has been giving me the run around.”

A council spokesperson said: “We take any issues that are raised by tenants relating to the condition of their Leeds City Council properties extremely seriously.

“Any specific complaints we receive are always fully investigated and appropriate action is taken to remedy the problem.

“Our team are seeking to resolve the issues Mr Sheard is currently facing as a matter of urgency.”
