The captain of a fishing vessel threw himself overboard to avoid being killed in a crazed axe attack, only to be devoured by fish.

Police in Manaus, Brazil arrested João Carlos Oliveira da Silva, 57, on Tuesday (July 26). He is suspected of trying to kill his 68-year-old captain in the municipality of Borba in 2019.

The victim's body was found in September last year in the municipality's river after being ravaged by fish.

João and the victim had gotten into an argument on the day of the killing, according to police chief Daniel Antony.

He grabbed an axe and attempted to kill his captain while they were still on the boat.

Antony said: "Due to a fight, João would have run after the victim with an axe and in an attempt to defend himself, to avoid being hit, he threw himself into the water.

"And from then on he was no longer located at the time, he was only found days later already consumed by the fish."

The police chief explained that the cause of the deadly argument remains unknown, but that João confessed to trying to murder his captain.

A court order was issued and he was promptly arrested this week. He will remain behind bars until the trial.
