A plane has been forced to turn around mid-air after it was "held hostage" in an "emergency incident".

Malaysia Airlines flight MH122 was partway through a journey from Sydney to Malaysia today (Monday, August 11) when the ordeal broke out, forcing crew to change its flight path above New South Wales, reports 9News.

The aircraft had left Sydney Airport at 1.40pm local time today (Monday, August 14) and landed back on the runway at 3.47pm, where the Australian Federal Police were waiting to meet the plane.

"The AFP is responding to an emergency incident at Sydney International Airport," said a spokesperson.

It is now being held on the end of the runway with emergency vehicles nearby.

One social media user who said they were on the flight at the time took to X (formerly Twitter) claiming a passenger was "threatening staff and passengers".

In a series of videos posted to the platform, the alleged disruptor could be seen challenging cabin crew in the aisle of the aircraft.

In one clip, the man appears to address cabin crew, repeating the phrase: "My name is Mohammed, slave of Allah," before asking: "Are you a slave of Allah? Are you? Say it."

In another video he was herd saying: "It hurts my heart, it burns my heart," while a fellow passenger responds: "Do you even have a heart?"

Captioning the clips, the poster wrote: "#Sydney Airport is suffering at the hands of this lunatic as he has taken #MH122 hostage. Praying for everyone's safety and well being."

Fellow social media users were quick to comment on the clips, with one writing: "My mum and dad are on this plane. Still waiting to get off. Apparently they are still coming up with a a plan to get them off safely."
