A 12-year-old girl is under police guard at the hospital after being arrested by homicide detectives over the fatal stabbing of a woman at an apartment building in Melbourne’s west.

Emergency services were called to the Barkly Street building following reports that a 37-year-old woman had been found dead inside the complex shortly before 2am on Thursday.

Officers attended the building and arrested the girl at the scene. She was taken to hospital for assessment and remained under police guard on Thursday morning.

“Investigators are attempting to establish if the parties were known to each other,” Victoria Police said in a statement.

Police tape restricted access to the building on Thursday, as forensic officers combed the scene for evidence.

Anyone with information about the incident, or who has CCTV or dashcam footage of the area is asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or report the information online.
