Grandmother, 89, who missed receiving Christmas cards after her friends passed away is inundated with hundreds of letters from across the world

• Margaret Pattison, from Leeds, said she used to receive many Christmas cards
• But since receiving less, her granddaughter Jenny Leamey did a call out online
• The 33-year-old got hundreds of people from around the world to send cards 
• Ms Pattison left with ‘the biggest smile’ and ‘had a little cry’ when cards came

An 89-year-old grandmother was left ‘blown away’ after receiving hundreds of surprise Christmas cards from strangers all over the world. 

Widower Margaret Pattison, from Leeds, West Yorkshire, said that she used to receive a hefty Christmas card pile every year, but since many of her friends have passed away she had been getting less. 

Fortunately, her granddaughter Jenny Leamey took matters into her own hands and posted a call-out on social media.

Ms Leamey, 33, posted on Facebook asking if anyone would be willing to send her grandmother a card to lift her spirits over the festive season.

To even her surprise, the pair began to receive hundreds of Christmas cards from as far as North America.  

Ms Leamey’s Christmas card appeal for her grandmother said: ‘I am a 33-year-old who was brought up by her grandparents, they were all I could ever wish for as parents.

‘Now the roles have reversed and I am a carer for my 89-year-old disabled Nana.

‘My Papa passed away a few years ago now so my partner moved in with her during Covid to look after her as she broke her hip.

‘She’s still here and turning 90 on January the 3rd.

‘I was wondering if any of you kind people would send her a card this year?

‘It would be appreciated so much and she would enjoy reading every single one.

Fortunately, her granddaughter Jenny Leamey took matters into her own hands and posted a call-out on social media

The post received hundreds of likes and comments from people promising to send Ms Pattison a card.

Issuing an update to the masses, Ms Leamey said: ‘Thank you all, Nana has the biggest smile with all her Christmas cards that came today.

‘I think her smile says it all to be honest, she had a little cry, bless her.

‘She would love to know a little about the person that has sent it like where you are from or even what you are up to for Christmas? Thank you so much ladies and gents, we hope you all have a lovely Christmas and a Happy New Year’

‘She says she’s so happy with them all and told me we need blu tack for the walls.

‘Thank you for telling her about your grandchildren and great grandchildren and that you are cooking for them all at Christmas.

‘She loves reading about what people are up to.

‘Thank you so much for the chocolates, she said she is having one a day until Christmas.

‘Oh and the birthday card is behind her clock until her birthday, thank you all so much.’

Ms Leamey added that her grandmother was ‘really enjoying herself’ opening the hundreds of cards.   

‘She mentioned that when she was younger, she used to get loads of Christmas cards from all of her friends and family.

‘Although as the years passed she stopped receiving them as people passed away or people stopped sending them.

‘Bless her, she’s really enjoying herself opening them all, there were hundreds.

‘People in North America said they had sent some but they might not have arrived yet and someone in South America too.

‘She loves Christmas cards and enjoys reading them and has them on her walls as she loves Christmas and everything about it.

‘She just loves reading about what people are up to for Christmas.’
