Healthy woman, 27, died after routine jaw operation turned into tragedy

A young and healthy woman tragically passed away just hours after a routine jaw operation.

Laura Broadwell, 27, underwent surgery at Castle Hill Hospital in Cottingham, Yorkshire on November 17, 2022, to align her teeth correctly.

Despite the operation going smoothly, Laura collapsed shortly after getting up to use the toilet during her recovery period. Despite the best efforts of medical staff she sadly passed away in the early hours of November 19, 2022, reports HullLive.

An inquest into Laura's death was held in Hull this week. Pathologist Melanie Levy confirmed Laura had developed deep vein thrombosis (DVT) after spending eight hours in surgery.

When Laura got up to use the toilet, the blood clots travelled from her calf to her lungs, causing cardiac arrest. Attempts to resuscitate her led to internal bleeding and Laura died a few hours later.

Laura's fiance, Ryan Hardy, shared in a statement: "We had six very happy years together." He also mentioned that Laura was fit and healthy before her operation but had been struggling with jaw pain and eating difficulties.

In his statement, he recalled: "When the surgeon discussed the procedure with Laura he said the chance of death from such surgery was so minimal it was not worth taking about." Laura seemed alert following the surgery, but suffered a seizure shortly after. Laura's condition worsened and she was moved to the ICU. She died a few hours later.

Laura's mum Dawn Broadwell said: "Laura had a good relationship with me and her brother. She was very family-oriented."

The surgeon who carried out the operation outlined the steps taken to minimise the threat of DVT. While anti-coagulant drugs can be administered, Dr Trevor Teemul did not want to risk excessive bleeding. Instead, he chose to provide compression stockings and ensured Laura was kept warm and hydrated during the operation. He also confirmed the length of the operation was standard.

Senior coroner Professor Paul Marks concluded Laura's death was due to 'misadventure'. He said: "I would like to extend my sincere condolences to the family and friends of Laura in this sad case."

Jonathan Lofthouse, group chief executive for Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, expressed his condolences after the inquest. He said: "We'd like to express our sincere condolences to Ms Broadwell's family at this very difficult time."
