Barrel of laughs! Hilarious moment pub owner chased runaway beer kegs down hill – before throwing himself in their path to stop them colliding with cars

- He heard a ‘rattle’ and came outside to find the containers rolling down street

This is the hilarious moment a bar owner chased a pair of runaway beer kegs down a hill before throwing himself in front of their path to stop them colliding with motorists.
Dan McCallion, 56, had stacked empty barrels outside the Abercorn Bar in Londonderry, Northern Ireland, during strong winds last Wednesday.
However when he heard a ‘rattle’ he went to investigate and was forced to sprint after them as they hurtled down a heavily-sloping street.
CCTV footage shows the apron-clad owner managing to catch up with the lager kegs – which were heading towards parked cars and a main A-road.
The publican, who is a keen cyclist, trips over one and falls to the floor as he brings one 15kg drum to a halt and manages to stop the second with one of his flailing legs.
Dan, who sprained his ankle in the ‘worrying’ incident, says he’s relieved he managed to catch the runaway kegs but admits he’s managed to laugh since watching the video back.
His footage has since gone viral with more than 100,000 views and he’s even been hailed ‘Superdan’ by staff in comparison to DC comic book hero Superman.

Dan, from Londonderry, said: ‘I was worried because they were picking up speed and I didn’t think I was going to get them. I just went as fast as I could.
‘I was setting up behind the bar and I just heard a keg rattling. I knew it was too early for a delivery, so I ran out and saw them rolling across the street.
‘It’s very steep so I realised I had to get them. I was looking ahead and could see they were heading to a busy road.
‘I thought it could have done severe damage to parked cars or caused a crash if I hadn’t stopped them.
‘I went down to grab one and lost my footing. I grabbed it and got it stopped and then I threw my leg out and stopped the other one.
‘I can run fast because I do a bit of cycling, so that helped. It was just pure relief that they hadn’t caused any damage.
‘I’ve had a few knocks off my bike so I’m used to falling. It was no bother to me to go down and get them.
‘I got a little sprain on my ankle and hurt my shoulder because of the tumble. I only started laughing when we put the video together. It’s funny to watch it back.’

Dan’s 50-litre kegs are regularly collected from outside the bar and replaced with full ones but the strong winds meant they were blown over.
He says his cycling hobby gave him the leg strength to catch up with the runaway kegs down Bennett Street before they caused any damage to parked cars or those on the A40 at the bottom.
The CCTV, captured just before 11am, was posted on Facebook where users flocked to praise the bar owner’s quick thinking.
One commented: ‘Well done Daniel. Going way above and beyond the call of duty.’
Another said: ‘He just may possibly have saved lives, no joke, very impressive!’
A third joked: ‘Is he alright? I’d bet he’s a barrel of laughs after that!’
