Humza Yousaf ally Karen Adam blasted for claiming that critics of the new First Minister are RACISTS as he faces questions over his ability to lead Scotland

  • She claimed ‘disgusting tropes’ were being used to attack the SNP leader

A senior ally of Humza Yousaf was blasted today after saying critics of the new First Minister were racists.

MSP Karen Adam used a column in the pro-separatist newspaper The National to claim ‘disgusting tropes’ were being used to attack the SNP leader, who is of migrant heritage.

It comes as Mr Yousaf struggles to assert himself in his new role. He has been nicknamed ‘Humza Useless’ by some of his political opponents.

He has faced criticism over his decision to appoint a taxpayer-funded minister for independence and another for ‘NHS recovery’ – after he spent two years in charge of the health service.

Yesterday it was revealed more than a third of recent attendances at accident and emergency units were not seen within the four-hour target time, according to new figures.

Scottish Labour warned that the new Health Minister had been left with a ‘deadly mess’ in A&E by his predecessor, Mr Yousaf.

Ms Adam, who represents Banffshire and Buchan Coast in north east Scotland, told the SNP-aligned paper: ‘I’m not opposed to people being scrutinised, particularly in public roles, but the level of racism and the sheer ignorance was astounding.’

But Pam Gosal, a Tory shadow minister for education who is of Indian heritage, said: ‘I have experienced racism and to throw accusations so flippantly is extremely damaging.

‘Critics of Humza Yousaf are right to question his woeful record in government. It’s our job to hold Humza Yousaf to account. Did Karen Adam miss the memo?’

He has handed another problem today with the news that Nicola Sturgeon’s husband Peter Murrell has been arrested in a police investigation into the SNP’s finances.

The former chief executive of the party has been taken into custody and was questioned by detectives as police searched their house in Glasgow on Wednesday morning.

A large police tent was set up outside their home, which was taped off.

Officers are also at the SNP’s HQ offices in Edinburgh, with police vans seen parked outside and uniformed officers standing inside the building.

Police Scotland have been investigating the spending of about £600,000 which was earmarked for Scottish independence campaigning.

Mr Yousaf, who took over from Ms Sturgeon last week, described the arrest as a ‘difficult day’ for the party.
