A DOG expert has given their top tips for owners trying to keep their pets cool during the heatwave.

It comes as the Met Office said scorching highs of 33C are expected in some parts of the country on Monday afternoon and Tuesday.

The heatwave will continue into the week, with the mercury set to soar above 30C, potentially seeing some of the warmest temperatures of the year.

It comes as people have been warned to expect delays to train journeys this week thanks to the scorching weather.

Brits have been urged to look out for the most vulnerable this week as a health heat warning has been issued across the country.

And with the sweltering hot temperatures, caring dog owners will also be thinking about how to keep their pets safe in the sun.

If you don't have access to these then a homemade alternative will still do the trick!

Drinking water

It's probably a no-brainer that like us, dogs will need plenty of water to help survive the heatwave.

Making sure dogs have regular access to fresh, cold water can help to prevent heatstroke.

Protecting paws

Protecting your pet's paws is a simple but effective way to keep your furry friends safe.

They can easily burn on hot surfaces so make sure you keep an eye out and use dog shoes or pads if necessary.

You could also walk your dog when it's cooler in the evening or stay on the grass instead of the pavement.

Cold treats

Just like we enjoy a refreshing ice cream in the sweltering weather, dogs will benefit from cold treats.

Giving pets treats such as frozen apple slices will help them cool down, especially as they are unable to sweat like humans.

Insect bites and sunburn

Other summer dangers to look out for include insect bites and sunburn.

While not the worst thing that could happen to your pup it could cause discomfort or an allergic reaction.

Following these great tips will most likely make the current heatwave far more enjoyable for you and your pet.
