Is Lucy Letby still a nurse?

Lucy Letby has been suspended from the nursing register.

Following the end of her criminal trial, the Nursing and Midwifery Council gave notice that it wants to strike her off the register for good.

The verdict was given on August 18, 2023, at Manchester Crown Court.

During the trial, the court heard that Letby used various methods to harm the babies that she was supposed to be caring for.

These included injecting air into the bloodstream, overfeeding with milk and poisoning with insulin.

Letby's crimes make her the UK's most prolific killer nurse and Britain’s worst-ever female serial killer.

A public inquiry to determine how Letby's crimes were able to happen has been set up.

It will look at how the NHS handled the case and how it responded to doctors who raised concerns about Letby.

The inquiry formally began in November 2023, although hearings may not begin until autumn 2023.

Inquiry chairwoman Lady Justice Thirlwall made her first public address on November 22, 2023.

She said: "The parents of the babies who were murdered or suffered injuries, some life-long, live with the consequences every day.

"On top of their grievous loss, they endured years of uncertainty about what had caused death or injury. For some, uncertainty remains.

"All have made it plain to me that they want to do all they can to make sure no one else suffers as they do."

How long will Lucy Letby be in prison?

Letby is serving a whole life term.

Only three other women have been handed the same sentence, and been told that they will die behind bars, in the UK.

Serial killers Rose West, the late Moors Murderer Myra Hindley and Joanna Dennehy were all handed whole life orders for their horrific crimes.

Mr Justice Goss told Letby at her sentencing that there was a "malevolence bordering on sadism in your actions".

He added that the case was a "cruel, calculated and cynical campaign of child murder involving the smallest and most vulnerable of children".

Letby will face a retrial in June 2024 at Manchester Crown Court.

The Crown Prosecution Service has sought the retrial on one count of attempted murder.

Letby is appealing her original convictions.

Where is Lucy Letby being held?

Letby was originally jailed at Low Newton prison in County Durham.

She was then moved to HMP Bronzefield, a private jail with 24-hour protection.

It has been reported that Letby has her own cell with en suite shower, a desk, phone and telly at the women's prison.

A source told The Sun in November 2023: "Letby seems happy as Larry.

"The facilities at Bronzefield are much nicer than most jails, because it’s privately run.
