You need to update your Chrome browser today or risk hack attacks, warns Google

If you use Google Chrome you need to check your web browser for an update immediately, according to a major security alert.

Google is urging people to download and install the latest version of their popular browser in order to get protection against eight major security flaws.

The security issues have been described as extremely dangerous and puts users of Chrome at risk of hacking, identity theft, or online surveillance.

So you'll need to head to your browser settings and install any available updates as soon as possible to stay secure.

To do this, click the three grey dots in the top-right corner of your Google Chrome browser.

Then, click 'About Chrome' on the menu on the left-hand side of the screen.

There should be an option to 'automatically update Chrome'. Once activated, this menu page will check for an update whenever opened, or give you the option to relaunch the browser if an update has been installed.

Regularly updating your browser is an easy way to keep on top of all the latest bug and security fixes.

Cybersecurity expert Mike Walters from Action1 described the vulnerabilities in the current version of Chrome as 'high severity'.

He explained that the 'most dangerous' bug has to do with the password manager tool on Chrome, which means 'an attacker can gain access to [vulnerable] passwords.'

He said: "Google has not mentioned any of these vulnerabilities being exploited in attacks. However, access to vulnerability details will be granted after most users update their Google Chrome. It is advised to take these vulnerabilities seriously and update your Chrome as soon as possible."
