Thousands of Palestinians protest in London over Israel-Gaza conflict

Jordanian riot police on Friday forcibly dispersed hundreds of pro-Palestinian protesters.

The protesters were attempting to reach an area of the border adjacent to the Israeli-occupied West Bank, as thousands of demonstrators held anti-Israel rallies across the country.

Video footage obtained by al-Araby showed approximately 500 protesters gathered outside a security checkpoint in Amman, the capital of Jordan.

The scene quickly turned chaotic as tear gas canisters filled the air, and additional rounds of tear gas were fired into the crowd.

This action came one day after Jordan’s government imposed a ban on protests near its border with Palestinian territories, following Israeli airstrikes on the Gaza Strip.

In an official statement, the Jordanian Interior Ministry declared: “Calls for gatherings and demonstrations in the Jordan Valley and border areas are not allowed.”

The ministry pledged to take all necessary measures to prevent any protests near the border. It further said: “The Jordan Valley and the surrounding areas along the border with Palestine are prohibited for gatherings, and the Jordanian armed forces are responsible for their protection and maintaining security therein.”

Demand for pro-Palestinian protests has surged in Jordan, as citizens express their solidarity with the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip. This surge in support follows Israel’s massive, sustained military campaign against Gaza in response to a military offensive by the Palestinian group Hamas in Israeli territories.

In Gaza, the toll of the recent Israeli airstrikes stands at over 1,400 fatalities and 6,200 individuals wounded since the events began on Saturday, according to the latest figures provided by Palestinian authorities. This includes 445 children and 245 women among those who lost their lives in Gaza.

Jordan has a long and complex history of hosting Palestinian refugees.

Following the Arab-Israeli war of 1948 and the subsequent creation of the State of Israel, hundreds of thousands of Palestinians were displaced from their homes and sought refuge in neighboring countries, including Jordan.

Today, Jordan is home to a significant Palestinian population, many of whom hold Jordanian citizenship. While the circumstances of Palestinians in Jordan have evolved over the decades, the issue of Palestinian rights and statehood remains a deeply sensitive matter in the country.

The solidarity protests, as witnessed in recent days, reflect the enduring connection between the Palestinian cause and Jordan’s history and its people.
