KFC slammed for ‘hairy blue’ chicken but insists it is ‘absolutely harmless’

A family who splashed out £19 on a huge KFC meal were left disgusted when they found what looked like "hairy blue mould" on their popcorn chicken.

Zoe Brookes and Stephen Wilkin binned their whole feast after spotting the weird mark on their food from the fast-food giant’s Stafford branch.

Mum-of-two Zoe, aged 24, told StokeonTrentLive: "We got the order and, in my opinion, a piece of the popcorn chicken was mouldy.

"It was hairy and appeared to me to have blue mould on it.

"We were disgusted and didn’t eat the rest of the meal. It put us off.

"My children, who are six and eight, could have been eating that."

The fuming couple were apologised to and offered a refund and replacement on their two large popcorn chickens and fillet burger.

But KFC has insisted the odd colouring wasn’t mould, instead blaming part of the cooking process.

A spokesman for the company said: "We are sorry to hear that they were put off their meal, that’s the last thing we want.

"Rather than being mouldy, this looks like contact with the edge of our trays, which is totally harmless.

"That being said, it doesn’t look great so the team did offer a refund and replacement to help make things right – it was the least we could do."

It comes just days after KFC was forced to apologise to a mum-of-five who found a grim dead caterpillar in her corn-on-the-cob.

Keeley Trundley, 38, said she was put off sweetcorn for life after finding the insect in her meal.

"At first I thought it was underdeveloped sweet corn," she said.

"But then I saw (what looked like) a worm and I started videoing because I thought it was just terrible. It was horrible."

She claimed it was "like a Bushtucker Trial" and said she felt sick for hours after seeing it.
