‘Killer clown’ sparks police investigation after boy, 17, was ‘followed along a pier by creepy costumed stranger’ – sparking fears bizarre trend has returned

  • Police are investigating after a clown sighting at Hampton Pier, Kent on Monday
  • Two teenagers claim they were followed by a clown hiding behind the sea wall
  • The incident has sparked fears the 2016 trend which terrified Britain is returning

A teenager and his friend have said they were stalked by a ‘killer clown’, sparking fears the creepy trend has returned.

Police are investigating after a 17-year-old claimed he was followed by a clown hiding behind the sea wall at Hampton Pier in Kent on Monday night.

Speaking on Facebook, the mother of the teenager said: ‘My 17-year-old son has just come home with his friend and they have both been followed along Hampton Pier to just past the park by someone dressed in a full clown outfit.

‘They were acting strangely, walking fast behind them, hiding and crouching behind the sea wall, and behaving creepily like they were acting out a killer clown.

‘My son and his friend hid for a couple of minutes and this clown was stood by the park along the sea wall swaying side to side.’

The incident is similar to the crazed 2016 trend when pranksters would dress as creepy clowns and terrify those nearby.

At the height of the trend, which came over from the United States, 50 incidents involving clowns were reported to Kent Police in just three days between October 7 and 10 in 2016.

More recently in 2018, Kent police revealed they were hunting for a man who dressed up as a killer clown after two teenage boys were chased with a baseball bat.

The clown reportedly laughed manically when he saw the boys and chased them through an underpass.

However there were reports across the country of people being chased down the roads with knives and one pregnant woman being brought into early labour.

One of the most severe cases in 2016 was reported in County Durham, where a knife-wielding clown chased four children as they were walking to school.

Another clown terrified a cyclist in Eastbourne, Sussex, jumping out of bush brandishing a weapon the same year.

The police have confirmed they were contacted over the reporting sighting on Monday but ‘no offences have been identified’.

A spokesperson said: ‘The person did not attempt to speak to the boys and no offences have been identified.

‘A local patrol carried out a search of the area but no one matching the description was located.’
