A Brazilian lawyer has died after he was accidentally shot when an MRI machine at a laboratory caused his gun to discharge.
Leandro Mathias, 40, died Monday at a São Paulo hospital in, where he had been under observation following the January 16 incident.
Mathias, a married father-of-one, was accompanying his mother to an appointment at Laboratorio Cura and forgot to remove his 9mm weapon from his waistband after entering the imaging room, according to Brazilian news outlet G1.
Police said that the MRI machine’s magnetic field pulled the concealed gun away from his waist.
The gun hit the machine and the impact caused it to discharge one bullet that struck him in the abdomen.

Mathias was rushed to São Luiz Morumbi Hospital, where he battled for his life for three weeks.
The lab’s director, Cesar Penteado, told the network that both Mathias and his mother had been instructed to remove all of their belongings, including metal objects, before entering the imaging room.
However, Mathias forgot to put away his gun as well as a loaded clip and 30 rounds of ammunition.

‘Both the patient and the companion, in this case, were given consent questionnaires and guidance on the magnetic field,’ Penteado said.
Mathias and his mother each signed a form acknowledging they were aware of the laboratory’s protocols.
‘He kept all the objects he had in the closet and, unfortunately, the only object he didn’t keep was the firearm he was carrying,’ Penteado said.
Mathias was known as a fierce proponent of gun rights and ran a TikTok account to counsel more than 7,000 followers on the legality of the right to bear arms.
