Lionesses’ Euro 2022 win is noticeably ABSENT from some Scottish front pages while sneering Scots blast the BBC for mentioning England’s victory during Commonwealth coverage
- Independence backing paper The National instead focused on indyref2
- Daily Record, Scottish Daily Star and Scots Sun put Celtic vs Aberdeen on front
- Social media users also complained about the mention of Lionesses’ victory
The Lionesses who brought football home after a 56 year wait by the nation have not been as celebrated in Scotland where some newspapers noticeably left off the historic win from the front pages.
England’s 2-1 defeat against Germany is the first time that any UK women’s national team has been able to secure a Euros win but instead the Daily Record, the Daily Star of Scotland and the Scottish Sun put Scottish Premiership game Celtic vs Aberdeen on the front.
While Independence backing paper The National completely focused on Nicola Sturgeon’s plan for indyref2 despite the Scottish First Minister also backing the Lionesses’ victory in a Tweet.
It also reported Tory leadership candidate Liz Truss’s statement that a second referendum – after the first was defeated in 2014 – would not have legal basis.
However, other leading newspapers including the Scottish versions of the Daily Mail, the Telegraph, the Times, and the Express also celebrated the win for the nation.
Meanwhile, Scots also took to social media to blast the BBC over mentioning England’s victory during its Commonwealth coverage while its own Women’s team did not qualify for the championships.

Scottish First Minister Sturgeon congratulated the ‘brilliant Lionesses’ on their stellar triumph against Germany at the UEFA Women’s Championship.
Referencing the Margaret Thatcher quote if you want something done ask a woman, she said: ‘And [it] just goes to show […] when you want something done (or in England speak, ‘brought home’) ask the women! Many congratulations – well deserved champions!’
Some of her fellow Scots did also come out strongly for the Lionesses and said it was a ‘great achievement’ for England.
While others said that they were supporting Germany for the win last night, claimed Scotland invented football and others questioned if the BBC should show or mention the game while broadcasting in other parts of the UK.
One Twitter user wrote: ‘Can the BBC give us the actual news? I want to know what’s going on in Kosovo, not Wembley.’

Another could not understand why another female sport was brought up at the Commonwealth Games’ where Scotland’s women hit eleven goals without reply during a hockey match.
Another person could not understand why BBC Scotland was talking about England and not the German’s for ‘providing a good match’ during its coverage.
They fumed: ‘England winning the Euros is good all round for women’s football. What? Not the tournament, not the final. [..] It’s all about England.’
Someone else who Scottish flags on their profile also wrote: ‘Hold your head high Germany. The better team did not win.’
