- Commentator Sarah Vine crowned Columnist of the Year at the Press Awards
- Katie Hind triumphed in the competitive Showbiz Reporter of the Year category
The Mail on Sunday’s outstanding journalism has been acclaimed with a host of honours at the Press Awards – the newspaper industry’s Oscars.
Peerless Mail on Sunday and Daily Mail commentator Sarah Vine was crowned Columnist of the Year (Tabloid) for the third time in four years.
Describing her as a ‘great writer who totally gets her readers’, judges heaped praise on her column, which they said was ‘by far the strongest’ and written with ‘verve and heart’.
The incomparable Katie Hind triumphed in the fiercely competitive Showbiz Reporter of the Year category for a series of agenda-setting scoops.
Her revelations about David Beckham’s £10 million Qatar deal was one example of what judges hailed as a ‘year of cracking exclusives written with warmth and wit’ and underscore why The Mail on Sunday is Britain’s biggest- selling Sunday paper.
In the Feature Writer of the Year (Tabloid) category, our fearless correspondent Ian Birrell was highly commended.

Sports columnist Riath Al-Samarrai and chief football writer Rob Draper achieved a magnificent double on a golden night at the British Sports Journalism Awards (SJA)
Meanwhile, sports columnist Riath Al-Samarrai and chief football writer Rob Draper achieved a magnificent double on a golden night at the British Sports Journalism Awards (SJA). Al-Samarrai was named Sportswriter of the Year and News Reporter of the Year for his scoop that boxer Conor Benn failed a drugs test before his fight with Chris Eubank Jnr.
He has also led the way on golf’s civil war and boxing’s links to suspected crime boss Daniel Kinahan, as well as producing a string of compelling interviews with stars such as ex-goalkeeper Neville Southall, heptathlete Katarina Johnson-Thompson and Rugby World Cup winner Steve Thompson. Draper was named Football News Reporter of the Year and won the Social Media Journalism award for his real-time reporting of the chaos at last year’s Champions League final in Paris. His in-depth follow-up helped to expose the lies and incompetence of French politicians and Uefa organisers.
He was cited in Parliament as playing an important role in clearing Liverpool fans of blame and uncovering the real reasons behind the debacle.
As ever, our sister paper, the Daily Mail, scooped several Press Awards honours, including Campaign of the Year for its undercover investigation into the dangers of smart motorways.
At the SJA ceremony, Isaan Khan collected the Ian Wooldridge Trophy and was named in the Ones To Watch (Writing) category.
