Massive inferno rips through church completely engulfing it in flames

    A church building is on fire as 12 fire engines and 80 firefighters have been called to fight off the towering blaze.

    The entire two-storey building is alight as emergency services work to control the blaze.

    The inferno of St Mark's church, which is on Hamilton Terrace in St John's Wood, is producing a significant amount of smoke as local residents have been urged to keep their windows and doors closed.

    Two of the Fire Brigade's new 32-metre turntable ladders are being used at the scene of the fire as well as water towers being utilised to put out the blaze as soon as possible.

    The Brigade's 999 Control Officers have since taken almost 30 calls regarding the blaze while the cause of the fire has not yet been found at this time.

    Emergency services were called at a little after 11pm on Thursday (January 26) with fire crews from North Kensington, Paddington, West Hampstead as well as surrounding fire stations currently helping at the scene.

    One local resident commented on a fire, tweeting: "I hope no one was hurt – can smell the smoke all through the house in Randolph Avenue."

    The London Fire Brigade official Twitter account confirmed the inferno, stating: "Firefighters are tackling a fire at a church in #StJohnsWood. The blaze is producing heavy smoke in the surrounding area – if you live locally please keep your windows and doors closed."

    They added: "Crews are continuing to tackle the church fire in #StJohnsWood and are using our 32-metre turntable ladder as a water tower. Please avoid the area whilst we make the scene safe."

    Designed in 1847, St Mark's Church is a historic building and of significance to its community in Maida Vale.
