A double rainbow appeared over Buckingham Palace alongside another one at Windsor Castle this afternoon, with Brits saying the Queen ‘sent us a sign’ and that she has ‘really left us’.

Shortly after the death of Queen Elizabeth II was announced, a rainbow appeared to those anxiously waiting to hear the news outside of the palace gates with some saying the Queen ‘left it’ for the nation.

A double rainbow even appeared over the Victoria memorial, prompting some to say it is ‘Queen Elizabeth with Prince Phillip’. 

This comes as Buckingham Palace announced today that the Queen passed away aged 96 this afternoon at Balmoral Castle. 

One twitter user said: ‘The rainbow at Windsor Castle made me cry. the rainbow Queen sent us a sign.’

Another said: ‘A rainbow breaks out, as the Union Jack is lowered to half-mast at Windsor tonight. A remarkable image. Farewell, Ma’am.’

Others took it as a sign that the Queen has ‘really left us’ as the rainbows appeared shortly as the news of the monarch’s death was announced.

People have been gathering at the Queen’s estates since Buckingham Palace announced today that doctor’s were growing ‘concerned’ over her health.

The royal family have been seen rushing to Balmoral to visit Her Majesty before she died this afternoon. 

Her death was confirmed at 6.30pm. 

A Buckingham Palace spokesman said: ‘The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon. The King and The Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow’.

The Queen’s death will see Britain and her Commonwealth realms enter into a ten-day period of mourning as millions of her subjects in the UK and abroad come to terms with her passing. 

Those on social media have expressed their sadness with the images of the rainbows, saying she has ‘left us beautiful rainbows over Balmoral and over Buckingham Palace’ and that the surprise rainbow was ‘symbolic’.

One twitter user said: ‘There was a double rainbow outside Buckingham Palace. Some here view it as a representation of the Queen and Prince Phillip.’

The Queen’s passing came more than a year after that of her beloved husband Philip, her ‘strength and guide’, who died aged 99 in April 2021.
