Monkey hitches a ride on the back of a deer

An unlikely animal friend duo have been delighting wildlife lovers online.

A deer was spotted having a very pleasant time giving its mate a small monkey a ride in southern India yesterday.

The video shows the duo wandering around a campus, inspecting some shrubbery and pipes, and has since gone viral.

It is unclear where the calm pair were off to or if their intrepid journey was in fact just a short joy ride in Chennai, Tamil Nadu.

But the friends were seemingly very relaxed in each other’s company at the Madras Indian Institute of Technology college campus.

Their ages are not known, but both animals do appear quite small.

The monkey at one point adopts a sort of jockey-esque position, with its large tail draping over the spotted deer’s back.

Monkeys and deers have been known to be pals before.

Wild Japanese macaques have long been known to ride sika deer.

National Geographic even reported, in 2019, that these relationships are sometimes sexual.

But the monkeys also get lifts from their friends with benefits in Japan.

It is thought that the monkeys will sometimes groom the deer, who in turn get to eat any fruits the macaques drop.
