Now the summer’s going to turn COLD: Forecasters warn temperatures could fall to 17C as Britain braces for 10 straight days of rain (so don’t get the BBQs out just yet)
- The week and a half of prolonged showers will begin today until August 7
Britons will see a grey and drizzly start to August, with some set to face chilly summer temperatures as low as 17C.
The Met Office has predicted there will be 10 days straight of showers throughout the summer month as many families escape to the UK’s beaches and national parks to make the most of the school holidays.
The week and a half of prolonged showers will begin today until Monday August 7, the forecaster has said.
The ‘heavy’ and ‘thundery’ showers have sparked concerns for the fifth Test of the Ashes, with up to 70 per cent of rain expected to fall.
‘There will be another seven to 10 days of this unsettled weather as the jet stream comes in from the west giving us periods of rain and showers and moderate temperatures of 20°C in the south and 17 to 18°C in the north,’ meteorologist Phil Morrish said.

The cold start to August comes as a report by the Met Office earlier this week showed that 40C summer temperatures ‘could become the norm’ in the UK.
It is not all bad news, however. The Met has predicted that ‘brighter’ and ‘occasionally warmer’ temperatures are expected towards the end of the month.
But forecaster did point out a ‘prolonged dry and hot spell is unlikely’.
The rain will continue into August, bringing a ‘wet start’ for many, lingering around northern England and parts of Scotland.
Through to Tuesday, showers are expected to develop across the UK with a risk of ‘heavy’ rain and thunder.
Meanwhile, Wednesday will be a story of ‘sunshine’ and ‘showers’, with outbreaks of rain across southwest England and showers in London.
Thursday and Friday will see potential ‘strong winds’, ‘heavy rains’ and showers across Britain.
Sunday will see ‘unsettled’ weather with rain spreading across the southwest and northeastwards across Britain in the afternoon and evening

Finally, the weekend of August 5 will see more ‘unsettled’ weather with ‘likely’ showers and longer spells of rain.
Met Office spokesman Grahame Madge said: ‘The forecast for the next couple of weeks is unsettled but that shouldn’t give an impression of continuous or heavy rain.
‘There is rain in the forecast for London for the next few days, but a lot of this rain will be showers, between which clearer spells will prevail.’
The forecaster’s website reads: ‘Unsettled conditions will persist through the start of August, with days of sunny spells and showers perhaps interspersed with periods of more persistent rain as low pressure systems move across the UK.
‘When these low pressure systems occur, they are more likely to run across southern parts of the UK while the north remains drier.
‘Otherwise, on showery days, showers will often be concentrated in the north and east, where they may be heavy and thundery at times and could occasionally merge into longer spells of rain.
‘Western areas are more likely to remain drier, although the chance of showers remains.
‘Temperatures are expected to be slightly below normal, with a brisk northwesterly breeze exacerbating the cool feel.
‘Overall, there is a higher than usual risk of strong winds.’
