Mystery blast on gas line linking Russia and Europe so big it sparked earthquake

Ukraine has accused Russia of causing gas leaks in two major pipelines in the Baltic Sea.

Powerful blasts were registered in the areas of the three mystery leaks from the Russian-owned Nord Stream 1 and 2, near Denmark.

Sweden’s National Seismology Centre (SNSN) confirmed the explosions measured 2.3 on the Richter scale.

‘There is no doubt that these were explosions,’ SNSN seismologist Bjorn Lund told public broadcaster SVT.

Nord Stream 1 has two leaks northeast of Bornholm, while Nord Stream 2 has one leak south of Dueodde.

They were discovered by the Danish Defence F-16 interceptor response unit.

Prohibition zones have now been established around them for ‘the safety of ship and air traffic’.

A statement from the Danish Defence said: ‘The frigate Absalon and the pollution control vessel ship Gunnar Thorson are on their way to carry out water monitoring at the exclusion zones, and the Danish Defence are also supporting with a helicopter capacity.

‘In addition, the patrol ship Rota was in the area last night.’
